Giants report: Just spitballin’ some late draft thoughts … Am actually just a little bored tonight; we’re 9 days from the draft and there is just no buzz out there at all. In fact, I suspect that guys who say they’re ‘hearing’ stuff are just making it up!! I’ve just been running the various Giants’ options thru my mind and I don’t really want to read too much into stuff the tea leaves, but I was kind of intrigued by the news in the last little while that the second wave of in-house visits includes Derek Stingley as well as second-round OTs Tyler Smith and Abe Lucas.
We’ve sort of known for awhile that Wink Martindale’s pressure defense needs good corners. There is also a sense that the value of really good corners has gone way up with the emergence of so many really good elite receivers around the league as you’re going to need elite cover guys to match up with the Adams’, Kupps, Jeffersons’ and Diggs etc. now dotting rosters around the NFL. Until just recently, though, it looked like Sauce Gardner was going to be the only corner who was going to fit that description this year and very likely wasn’t going to make it to the Giants’ picks. Of course, there are other good corners out there to be had in later rounds, but none in that potential elite category. But after a strong pro day you get the sense that LSU’s Stingley is very much back in that potentially elite discussion such that the Giants would pretty much be guaranteed getting one of the two corners with at least the 7th pick.
I also kind of suspect that the Giants would really like to get one of the potentially elite edge rushers like Travon Walker or Kayvon Thibodeaux, again because they are elite prospects that play a position you want elite players. And if either, or both was available at #5, would that make the OL guys potentially the odd man out; hence the late visits by the second round OTs. Again I am sure the Giants would love to have an elite OT to play the right side, but it is NOT a position you necessarily need an elite guy.
