Jones douses Pitts to Cowboys trade talk … The past week or so, the NFL have been abuzz with talk about the possibility of Dallas trading up to acquire former Florida TE Kyle Pitts. In particular, Dallas owner/G.M. Jerry Jones was believed to be enamored with Pitts, who is generally considered to be the best non-QB prospect – if not the best prospect period – in this year’s draft class, in Thursday opening round. However, Jones kind of threw a cold bucket of water on the whole notion earlier today during an interview with a local radio station. On the one hand, Jones repeatedly downplayed his actual interest in Pitts and, perhaps more importantly, bragged on how the Cowboys are in position to select the ‘best defensive player’ in this week’s draft, most likely either of CBs Patrick Surtain of Alabama or South Carolina’s Jaycee Horn.
Right now, barring a trade, it appears that Atlanta is likely to take Pitts with the 4th pick overall on Thursday. ‘Barring a trade’ though is the operative phrase. There are some whispers around the league that Miami, which currently has the 6th pick, is seriously considering trying to move back up a couple of spots to ensure Pitts is still on the board when they get on the clock. The Dolphins acquired the 6th pick from Philadelphia after trading from #3 to #12 with San Francisco. At the time, the Dolphins figured the 6th pick was a safe spot to nab Pitts, but in the interim, the former Gators’ star has really risen such that even if he somehow makes it past Atlanta at #4, Cincinnati appears ready to select him with the 5th pick. Based on the trade value chart, it would cost the Dolphins something in the range of a mid-third round pick to move up those two spots which might be a reasonable price for the Dolphins to pay as they do have two picks in each of the first and second rounds. Whatever, we will find out for sure in just over 48 hours.
