NFC East full of surprises; 49ers in line for 3rd minority comp pick … It was a day of surprises in the beleagured NFC East today as both Washington and Philadelphia made somewhat unexpected major hires. Washington, for example, has reportedly agreed on terms to hire San Francisco personnel exec Martin Mayhew as the No-names new G.M. Its a surprise because pretty much all week the word was that the WTFs would be hiring Marty Hurney for the job. Hurney, of course, worked with Washington head coach Ron Rivera in Carolina before both were fired. Hurney, though, has reportedly agreed to an as yet unspecified front office with the No-names. For the record, Mayhew, who had a previous stint as a G.M. in Detroit has been San Francisco’s director of player personnel the past couple of seasons. And because Mayhew is a minority candidate, it appears that the 49ers will get a third 3rd round pick in 2023 as compensation, although that has yet to be officially confirmed. The 49ers had already been awarded 3rd round picks in both 2021 and 2022 as part of the NFL’s new minority hiring policy after the NY Jets hired San Francisco defensive co-ordinator Robert Saleh as their new G.M. Meanwhile, Philadelphia has reportedly hired former Indianapolis offensive co-ordinator Nick Sirianni as the Eagles new head coach. Sirianni replaces Doug Pederson who was fired earlier this month after a very disappointing 4-11-1 record. Prior to the the announcement about Sirianni’s hiring all signs had been pointing to the Eagles hiring Josh McDaniels, the Patriots better-known OC. Job #1 for Sirianni with the Eagles apparently will be to try and repair the relationship between the club and QB Carson Wentz who was benched the final month of the season and was totally on the outs with Pederson.
