Heads rolling on Black Monday

December 30, 2019

Axe out on Black Monday … That didn’t take long as a number of teams have already made moves in the wake of the conclusion of the 2019 regular season. As expected, Washington has fired team president Bruce Allen after the Redskins finished the season at 3-13 and with the 2nd overall pick at the 2020 draft. There is no immediate word on how the Redskins plan to replace Allen at the head of their football ops, but they are expected to announce the hiring of Ron Rivera as head coach any time. Rivera was fired by Carolina earlier this season. In fact, it’s been a tough morning in the NFC East as the Giants have fired head coach Pat Shurmur after a 4-12 campaign. The Giants, who will pick 4th this coming April, though, will reportedly retain G.M. Dave Gettleman for another year. The Giants are expected to go hard after Baylor head coach Matt Ruhle who has been an assistant with the team in the past. And there is still no word out of Dallas on the fate of head coach Jason Garrett after the Cowboys failed to make the playoffs, but it is widely expected he will not be retained. Meanwhile, Cleveland has fired head coach Freddie Kitchens after just one year in which the Browns were 6-10 despite entering the year labelled as a team to watch this fall. The Browns are believed to be interested in Patriots’ offensive co-ordinator Josh McDaniels.
