Bowling for no dollars

December 19, 2019

Bowling for no dollars … The annual college football bowl fest kicks off on Friday with a couple of preliminary games between 7-5 teams that in reality nobody’s mother would even care which side won. Fortunately, though, there are several prospects for the 2020 draft worth a look in today’s games. That will be particularly the case Friday evening when Utah State plays Kent State in the Frisco Bowl at 7:30 PM ET on ESPN as the Aggies have a legit second-day candidate in QB Jordan Love (#10, 6-4, 225), although he hasn’t had anywhere near the year expected with a 61% completion mark and almost as many picks (16) and TD passes (17). In fact, there was considerable speculation in recent days that Love would transfer rather than enter the draft, but in the end announced that he would indeed be going pro where he has the physical tools to be something of a sleeper at the position. Friday’s doubleheader kicks off off-shore in the Bahamas Bowl where Buffalo and Charlotte meet in another battle of 7-5 teams at 2 PM ET on ESPN. And while neither team is likely to have anyone selected anywhere near to the first three rounds, each team does have a couple of players who should at least get some consideration in the later rounds including veteran Buffalo LT Evin Kslezarczyk (#67, 6-6, 310) and SS Joey Banks (#9, 5-10, 200), along with DE Alex Highsmith (#5, 6-3, 245) and LB Jeff Gemell (#34, 6-2, 235) of Charlotte. In fact, there should be a pretty good battle between Kslearczyk and Highsmith who is a little undersized edge rusher, but is very disruptive nonetheless posting 14 sacks this season.
