As noted earlier today, the big story out of this morning’s measurement session for the QBs was that Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray was able to check off most of the important boxes. Projected to be barely 5-9, Murray came in at a tad over 5-10, about the same height as Seattle’s Russell Wilson; he also weighed in at 207 pounds, again bigger than many expected. Most importantly, perhaps, Murray’s hand measured in at a perfectly respectable 9.5 inches. GBN College Football Investigative Reporter Larry Parker reports, though, that Murray has confirmed that he won’t throw during Saturday’s on-field testing for the QBs. In fact, Murray apparently won’t do anything on Saturday including run the 40. Instead, its expected he will do a full workout at Oklahoma’s pro day on March 13. Should be a pretty good turnout!
For the most part, there really weren’t many surprises at the QB weigh-in as, like Murray, most of the top-rated also spent the day checking off the required boxes. Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins, who is dueling Murray to be the first QB picked this coming April, came in maybe a half inch shorter than expected at just under 6-3.5, but was a solid 231 pounds with 9.5-inch hands plus. In fact, Missouri’s Drew Lock was a tad taller than Haskins, but there may be some concerns about the fact that his hands are slightly on the small side at only 9-inches. Meanwhile, West Virginia’s Will Grier, who some scouts feared might be closer to 6-1, came in okay at 6-2.5, again with 9.5 inch hands.
There also weren’t many surprises among the other QBs either. Buffalo’s Tyree Jackson, for one, stood out as he measured in at 6-7, 249 with the biggest hands (10.25″) of any of this year’s QB. On the other hand, scouts were hoping that Washington State’s Gardner Minshew would be a little taller than the 6-0.7 he registered, although he did weigh a solid 225 and was the only other QB in Indy other than Buffalo’s Jackson to have hands over 10″. Meanwhile, Brett Rypien of Boise State, Washington’s Jake Browning and Easton Stick of North Dakota State also measured in at under 6-2, while Kyle Shurmur of Vanderbilt, the son of Giants’ head coach Pat Shurmur, was the only QB to have hands under 9-inches.
Here are the full results from the QB weigh-in.
