QB buzz

February 15, 2015

Who’s #1 … So far, Tampa Bay, which owns the #1 pick overall at the 2015, hasn’t given many hints as to what the franchise plans to do this year’s first first. Heck, its possible that with such an undefined draft class to date that the Buccaneers still aren’t at all sure themselves as to what direction to take. However, with the annual scouting set to get underway in Indianapolis on Wednesday, the buzz around the league is that the Buccaneers are still leaning toward taking Florida State QB Jameis Winston with the top pick. And needless to say, the Buccaneers will be all over everything that Winston says or does at the combine this week. For those who have been in another galaxy the past few months, Winston is clearly the most pro ready pocket passer in the 2015 draft, but has all those character red flags that no doubt will be raised in team interviews this week. Meanwhile, there also appears to be a growing sense around the league that Tennessee which has the 2nd pick, is leaning toward passing on the QB Tampa Bay doesn’t select, either Winston or Oregon’s Marcus Mariota (or both if the Bucs go in another direction completely). Instead, the thinking around the league is that the Titans will take another year to see what they have in Zach Mettenberger, their 6th round pick from last May, at QB and using the #2 on another position. At the same time, the real value of the #2 pick for the Titans if they didn’t want Mariota would be to trade the pick to someone like the Jets at #4 or even Cleveland which has two #1s – the 12th and 19th – or Philadelphia. There is also a sense around the league that Oakland is leaning toward taking a WR – either USC’s Amari Cooper or even rising Kevin White of West Virgina – with the 4th pick, than a WR. Of course, there’s still over 2 and a half months until the draft during which time much can change. Stay tuned.
