April 29, 2017

At times anther strange night for the NFL Draft, but in reality Round 1 was going to be very difficult to top. The beginning of Round 2 seemed to portend some heavy movement. After the PACKERS’ Ted Thompson decided that no one was offering enough to make them move back again and took their widely anticipated CB in KENNY KING, the next 4 Picks were all traded.

Maybe it’s just me but I was more than a little surprised when DaShone KIZER was not the object of everyone’s attention after all. He lasted all the way to the 20th Pick of the second round. Then having failed to get a developmental QB in Round 1 the BROWNS stepped up at overall Pick 52 and grabbed yet another Ohio native QB. There will be some pressure to play him soon if the team cannot win behind CODY KESSLER or BROCK OSWEILER, it will not be the groundswell it likely would have been for an early First Round QB Pick. HUE JACKSON will get a bit more time to develop KIZER.

Speculation that Round 2 would be the breakout point for a run on DB was absolutely correct. 11 of the 32 Round 2 Picks were DB. Perhaps the most interesting one of the 11 was SIDNEY JONES being the Pick at 43 by the Draft hometown EAGLES even those his torn achilles may keep him out of action for at least the first month of the 2017 season. Clearly EAGLES scouts and personnel people feel he will be worth the wait.

As expected the PATRIOTS were the last team to join in on the drafting fun. The team’s first selection did not come until Pick 83 when the team took Edge-Rusher DEREK RIVERS from Youngstown State. Ironically they had been scheduled to Pick earlier in Round 3 but traded out.

Overall it was a much slower night for QB than had been expected. KIZER was the only QB selected in Round 2. Two QB were them selected in the seriously extended Round 3, which swelled with the addition of 7 Compensatory Picks. DAVIS WEBB was taken at Pick 87 by the GIANTS. Then in a big surprise, C.J. BEATHARD of Iowa was taken at Pick 104, ahead of anticipated QB JOSHUA DOBBS & NATHAN PETERMAN. Guess that scenario is an illustration of that old adage that it only takes one team to luv you.

Here’s one stat that should not surprise you; ALABAMA led all schools with 9 players taken in the first 100 selections.

Most felt that DB was the deepest and most talented position group in this year’s talent pool. If the first 100 Picks is any indication of more to come on Saturday it may be a runaway talent race. 28 of the Top 100 Picks were DB. May I say that seems amazing to me.

I like a team that can combine properly evaluating players talent, with filling needs on their roster. The CHARGERS knew it was about time to help out PHILLIP RIVERS so he can play a few more seasons in the NFL as their QB. IN order they drafted WR/MIKE WILLIAMS, G/T FORREST LAMP & OG/DAN FEENEY. They should all start and be serious upgrades at their positions in 2017. Now the CHARGERS can concentrate on their defensive needs on Day 3.

Congrats from yours truly to the BENGALS for breaking the ice in Round 2 and drafting JOE MIXON/RB/Oklahoma. he should be a serious upgrade for their running attack. Now I strongly urge the team to draft an OL or two Saturday to replace their VFA losses of WHITWORTH & ZEITLER.

MONTRAVIUS ADAMS, 3rd Round Pick of the PACKERS got word of his selection over the phone in a hospital room, just after the birth of his son.

Get some sleep Draftniks. The last 4 Rounds start promptly at noon later today.
