NFL combine is rightfully abuzz about Washington WR John Ross’ new record of 4.22 for the 40 which is now official. (Note that this year the unofficial initial times are pretty matching up with the official results, unlike earlier years when one could quite literally add anywhere from 0.5-1.0 seconds. In fact, the overall impression was that this year’s WRs as a group were really fast.
Same story for the TEs. Indeed, 9 of the 14 TEs that ran today in Indy ran under 4.7, which used to be the gold standard that separated fast TEs from the rest of the crowd. Ole Miss’ Evan Engram, for example, ran a very WR like 4.42, while OJ Howard, the consensus top guy at the position, made a case for himself as a potential top prospect by clocking a 4.51. Miami’s David Njoku, who many expected to run in the same range, was a little slower at 4.64, but was very smooth in the positional drills. Meanwhile, Va Tech’s Bucky Hodges posted a 4.57 clocking. Other TE 40 times of note: Iowa’s George Kittle ran a 4.52, Darrell Daniels of Washington had a 4.55, Gerald Everett of South Alabama and Jonnu Smith of Florida International both clocked 4.62, while Arkansas’ Jeremy Sprinkle had a 4.69. FTR none of Jordan Leggett of Clemson, Michigan’s Jake Butt nor Eric Saubert ran today
