Who to watch: LSU at Texas A&M

October 24, 2024

Who to watch: #8 LSU (6-1) at #14 Texas A&M (6-1); 7:30 PM ET; ABC … Kind of a quiet weekend with no top 10 teams going at it head-to-head, but there is a potentially intriguing game in the SEC where LSU will play at Texas A&M with first place in the conference on the line on Saturday evening. The game also has an interesting draft angle in that LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier (#13, 6-2, 200) is being whispered as being perhaps THE hot QB in the 2025 draft class. However, he’ll be looking for a big performance against the Aggies as he was less than overwhelming in his last two starts. Indeed, Nussmeier’s numbers are okay – he has a 65% completion rate, is throwing for over 300 yards per game and has 18 TD passes – but they’re hardly special as are his 6 picks in 7 games. Nussmeier is also far from the Tigers’ best prospect for 2025 as OT Will Campbell (#66, 6-5, 325) has top 10 potential. So did star DE/ER Harold Perkins, but he’ll likely be back at school next fall after tearing an ACL earlier this season. Back to the OL for a moment, LT Campbell combines with RT Emory Jones (#50, 6-5, 320), who has some late first round potential of his own, to give LSU the top 1-2 OT combination in the country, while TE Mason Taylor (#86, 6-5, 255) is one of the top 2-3 prospects at that position. He combines with WRs CJ Daniels (#4, 6-1, 205), Zavion Thomas (#0, 5-10, 195) and Kyren Lacy (#2, 6-2, 195) to give Nussmeier a solid receiver corps. At the same time, the Tigers also have several intriguing prospects on the other side of the ball starting with DE Sai’vion Jones (#35, 6-3, 290) a freakish athlete with first round tools who has finally started to consistently produce like one with 4.5 sacks so far this fall, while Oregon transfer Braydn Swinson (#4, 6-3, 250) leads the team with 7. Meanwhile, other Tigers with later round grades include S Major Burns (#8, 6-2, 200), RB Josh Williams (#18, 5-9, 210), OG Miles Frazier (#70, 6-4, 325), DT Jalen Lee (#92, 6-2, 295) and CB Zy Alexander (#14, 6-1, 195).

For its part, Texas A&M also has a really intriguing player to watch in DE Nic Scourton (#11, 6-4, 285), who transferred from Purdue this past off-season and is starting to generate some legitimate top 10 buzz as he has one of the highest-ceilings of anyone in the upcoming draft. Scourton anchors what should be a very good defensive front which also includes a couple of Shemars: DT Shemar Turner (#5, 6-3, 300) and DE Shemar Stewart (#4, 6-4, 290). The Aggies also have an intriguing QB prospect in 3rd year junior Connor Weigman (#15, 6-2, 220) who has oodles of talent, but just hasn’t been able to stay on the field to date.
