Wednesday morning buzz … The countdown to the draft is now in full swing with less than 36 hours to go until the picks start coming off the board. And while there still isn’t a ton of buzz out there some stuff is starting to percolate. There are several reports out there this morning, for example, that the NY Jets are working the phones hard trying to put into place a deal to move down from the 3rd pick overall. There are also reports that Detroit is also actively seeking a trade down from the 8th pick. At the same time, there are indications that Atlanta would like to move up in order to grab one of the top DTs in this year’s draft. No surprise that the Falcons are looking at a move as they have traded at least one pick in each of the past ten drafts. Whether the Falcons are specifically talking with the Jets or Lions isn’t clear, but both would make some sense as a trading partner for Atlanta, especially Detroit. If the Falcons were able to work a deal with the Lions to move up from pick 14 to #8, they’d be in a position to target rising Clemson DT Christian Wilkins, while Detroit would still have a shot at one of this year’s top offensive linemen or Iowa TE Noah Fant. Needless to say it would cost the Falcons considerably more to move up to the 3rd pick, but there they’d be in a position to select either of star DTs Quinnen Williams of Alabama or Houston’s Ed Oliver. Meanwhile, just a little bit farther on down the board, there are persistent rumblings that both Carolina, which currently picks 16th, and Houston, at #23, are also angling to move up in Thursday’s opening round, presumably with the idea of taking one of those top offensive linemen. Stay tuned!
