Texans hire Ravens’ Culley as new head coach

Texans hire Culley as new head coach; Ravens get comp picks … Houston will reportedly fill the league’s last remaining vacant head coaching position with long-time NFL assistant David Culley. For anyone saying ‘Who’ don’t feel badly, you aren’t alone. Culley has never even been a co-ordinator although he has had a couple of stints in which he was listed as an assistant head coach. Culley, now 65, spent the past two seasons in Baltimore where he was the Ravens’ passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach. For the record, the Ravens finished 32nd and last in the NFL in passing this past season, although much of that of course is attributable to the fact they were more a running team with Lamar Jackson at QB. Culley also spent the better part of his career working with Andy Reid so he does, in fact, know a little something about passing in the NFL. Also, for the record, Culley is a minority candidate which means Baltimore will get compensatory 3rd round picks in both 2021 and 2022. Left unsaid in all of this is what incumbent Texans’ starting QB DeShaun Watson thinks of the hire. Watson is believed to have a relationship with Culley, but he has also said recently that it no longer matters who the Texans coach is; he simply wants out of Houston. Stay tuned!
