Tag day in the NFL

March 7, 2023

It is Tag Day in the NFL … The deadline for teams to designate franchise and transition players is later this afternoon at 4 PM ET. So far, four players – RBs Josh Jacobs of Las Vegas and Dallas’ Tony Pollard, Washington DT Daron Payne and Jacksonville TE Evan Engram – have been franchised by their respective teams. Those players are still free to negotiate and sign an offer sheet with other teams, but their original team has the right to match any offer and if they don’t receive two first round picks as compensation. And all eyes will be on Baltimore and New York today as QBs Lamar Jackson of the Ravens’ and the Giants’ Daniel Jones could also be franchised. In fact, people around the league quite expect Jackson to get tagged, whereas it is thought the Giants and Jones are a lot closer to an agreement. Plus it is believed the Giants really want to use their franchise tag on RB Saquon Barkley who also becomes a free agent next week. Meanwhile, one guy who apparently won’t get tagged is Kansas City OT Orlando Brown who has been told by the Chiefs that he will not be franchised. Stay tuned.
