Spartan CB; 2nd FAU RB latest to enter draft … Two more juniors entered the 2019 draft over the past day or so including rising Michigan State CB Justin Layne and Florida Atlantic RB Kerrith Whyte. Layne, in particular, is not yet a household name nationally, but NFL scouts are very aware of his potential; he’s a converted WR with nice length, decent recovery speed and excellent ball skills. Layne, who is listed at 6-2, 185 with a projected 40 time in the low 4.5 second range. This past season, just his second at the position, Layne rang up an impressive – for a corner – 72 tackles, while picking off a pass and breaking up a conference high 15 other passes. Meanwhile, Whyte is actually the second FAU RB to enter this year’s draft joining Owls’ starter Devin Singletary in this year’s draft class. Even playing second fiddle to Singletary, one of the most productive backs in the country over the past couple of seasons, Whyte still ran for over 900 yards himself, although he’s actually somewhat better known as a KO returner; indeed, Whyte is the only FAU player ever to run a KO back for a score and he’s done it twice. The addition of these two players brings the number of juniors and redshirt sophomores who have declared in one way or another that they will be entering the upcoming draft to 37. Underclassmen have until January 15th to apply to the NFL for early entry to the 2019 draft.
