Seahawks re-sign QB Smith; still looking at the position at the draft? … The fact that Seattle resigned veteran QB Geno Smith to a reported 3Y, $105M contract extension would seem, at least on first blush, preclude the Seahawks from selecting a QB with the 5th pick at the 2023 draft. However, my understanding is that the contract is actually very much front-loaded, such that it is really more a two-year deal that allows a pretty easy exit for the team after one. In fact, it looks like the Seahawks are still serious about looking at QB prospects with the 5th pick this year. And that shouldn’t be a total surprise. While Smith, the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year last fall, was one of the NFL’s top feel good storylines last fall, he’s is still in his 30s and until last year had written the book on being a journeyman NFL QB. Plus, the Seahawks appear to be fully aware that the team simply can’t count on having a top 5 pick down the road.
