He’s back!!! … For awhile!!! … For those that have been out of the universe, there will be no second season of the popular sit-com ‘Will he, or won’t he?’ about the eccentric veteran Pittsburgh Steelers’ QB and whether he’ll play or not that upcoming season. That’s because eccentric veteran Steelers’ QB Aaron Rodgers resigned with the team for the 2026 season soon after the draft. And we note this story not so much because Rodgers will be back with the Steelers this fall; in the end, nobody really believed that he wouldn’t be, but the 42-year-old Rodgers then further announced this past weekend that 2026 would in fact be his last season and that means the Steelers will very likely be one of the teams looking to mine what looks to be a very good QB class at the 2027 draft. The Steelers did select former Penn State QB Drew Allar with a 3rd round pick in last month’s draft; however, while he would certainly appear to have the tools, Allar’s tenure with the Nittany Lions was marked by some very frustrating inconsistencies.
We also mention the subject as we have received a number of queries from readers following up on a story earlier from this week noting that there has been some speculation that some of next year’s top QB prospects might balk at playing for certain teams. Their question has been whether there might be another shoe to drop so to speak in that give the potential strength of next year’s QB class, could some teams be tempted to tank this fall in order to ensure, or at least increase their chances of getting one of those guys. And the simple answer is possibly, although its hard to simply plan to tank thru a full 17-game schedule in the NFL. More likely, there could be teams that take the foot off the gas pedal later in the season if things aren’t going their way.
At the same time, its hard not to make the case that Arizona hasn’t done much at all to address the crucial QB position after releasing veteran starter Kyler Murray. The Cardinals did select former Georgia and Miami QB Carson Beck with the first pick in the 3rd round of the 2026 draft, but like Allar above is a player with some tools who got his teams to the CFP final last fall, but whose play in college was also marked with a lot of lows. Meanwhile, the Cardinals did pretty much zilch on the QB free agent market and the guy they hoped would at least carry the torch this fall – journeyman Jacoby Brissett – is holding out. Other teams that could be looking at QBs early in the 2027 along with Arizona and Pittsburgh include the NY Jets and Cleveland along with maybe Atlanta and Minnesota. For those that haven’t seen it, CBS Sports has a nice run-down on teams with QB issues ahead of the upcoming draft.
