QB Newman opts out

September 2, 2020

UGA QB Newman latest to opt out … Georgia QB Jamie Newman, a graduate transfer from Wake Forest who was projected to be the Bulldogs’ starter this season, has announced that he has decided to opt out of the season and instead will begin preparing for the 2021 draft where he is projected to be one of the first 4-5 players at the position off the board. No tears for Georgia, though, as QB J.T. Daniels, a two-year starter at Southern California, also transferred to Georgia this off-season and his waiver for immediate eligibility was approved in July. However, Daniels has yet to be fully cleared for contact as he is coming off an ACL injury late last summer. We should also note that the ranks of players opting out of the college campaign increased earlier this week when rising Memphis redshirt sophomore RB  Kenneth Gainwell would also be passing on the season and entering next April’s draft. Gainwell isn’t all that big at 5-10. 195, but he was one of the most productive backs in the country last fall when he ran for almost 1,500 yards and 13 TDs, while catching 51 passes for another 600-plus yards and three scores.
