Projected 53-man Giants opening day roster

August 13, 2023

QB (2): Daniel Jones, Tyrod Taylor

On the bubble: Tommy Devito

Comments: DeVito clearly outplayed Taylor in the pre-season opener, but let’s get real here, the Giants are not going into the season with an undersized, undrafted rookie a heartbeat away from having to take over the offence!

RB (3): Saquon Barkley, Matt Breida, Eric Gray

On the bubble: Gary Brightwell, James Robinson

Comments: Still wouldn’t be surprised if Brightwell makes the cut because he plays specials, but he may get caught up in the numbers game if the Giants want to save roster spots for other positions. Crowder likely the next man up if Robinson can’t go to start the season.

WR (7): Darius Slayton, Parris Campbell, Isaiah Hodgins, Jalin Hyatt, Sterling Shephard, Cole Beasley, Wan’Dale Robinson

On the bubble: Jameson Crowder; Collin Johnson

Comments: That’s a lot of receivers, but this is a team that wants to throw the ball all over the field.

Tight end (3): Darren Waller, Daniel Bellinger, Tommy Sweeney

On the bubble: Lawrence Cager

Comments: Third TE likely comes down to Sweeney or Cager but its just hard to see Cager getting much playing time at all as long as Waller is healthy, whereas Sweeney gives the Giants a better blocking option.

Offensive line (8): Andrew Thomas, Evan Neal, Ben Bredeson, Mark Glowinski, John Michael Schmitz, Tyre Phillips, Josh Ezeudu, Shane Lemieux

On the bubble: Devery Hamilton, Matt Peart, Korey Cunningham

Comments: The top 6-7 guys look like looks and we think Lemieux sticks because of his ability to play C and OG, although Hamilton provides that same versatility at G/T. However, that leaves the Giants without a true #3 OT which could bring in Peart or Cunningham, although it also could very well have the Giants scouring the waiver wire or trade market for a veteran swing tackle.

DT (5): Dexter Lawrence, Leo Williams, A’Shawn Robinson, Rakeem Nunes-Roches; DJ Davidson, Jordan Riley

On the bubble: None

Comments: Arguably the Giants deepest position and the four vets are pretty much locks; so is Davidson likely if he is fully recovered from last year’s ACL leaving the Giants with the question can they afford to keep a 6th IDL. We think they do, but it could be tougher to find a spot to make a cut.

OLB/DE/ER (5): Kayvon Thibodeuax, Az OJulari, Jihad Ward, Tomon Fox, Oshane Ximines

On the bubble: Tashawn Bower, Habs Baldonado

Comments: Both Bower and Baldonado flashed against the Lions but we still think the Giants stick with the vets.

LB (5): Bobby Okereke, Darian Beavers, Micah McFadden, Carter Coughlin, Cam Brown

On the bubble: None

Comments: Coughlin and Brown stick because they are core special teamers. This is another position where a late waiver wire pick up of a veteran wouldn’t be a shock.

CB (6): Adoree’ Jackson, Deonte Banks, Tae Hawkins, Darnay Holmes, Cor’Dale Flott, Aaron Robinson

On the bubble: Amani Oruwariye

Comments: Another tough call with the last spot coming down to Robinson or Oruwarye but we think the former gets it if he’s healthy

F/SS (5): Xavier McKinney; Jason Pinnock, Dane Belton, Bobby McCain, Nick McCloud

On the bubble: Gervarrius Owens

Comments: That’s a pretty deep, veteran deep such that Owens may just get caught up in the numbers game.

Special teams: (3) PK Graham Gano, P Jamie Gillan, LS Casey Kreiter

No bubble, no comments
