No combine for top DT Simmons, WR Williams because of assaults … Mississippi State DT Jeffery Simmons, a potential top 10 prospect f0r the upcoming draft, and Colorado State WR Preston Williams have reportedly been told that they will not be invited to next month’s scouting combine in Indianapolis because of past sexual assaults. The story was first reported by Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network. This could be a big deal for Simmons who is considered to be one of the hot prospects for the upcoming draft. He was arrested in 2016 after getting in the middle of a family dispute in which he ended up striking one of the antagonists. Simmons ultimately pleaded no contest to charges of simple assault and disturbing the peace for which he was fined and had to pay restitution. The good news for Simmons is that NFL teams have known about the incident for some time so it won’t be coming as a surprise; it also appears that he has been a solid citizen and excellent student since so it may not impacft his grade all that much. In fact, one could make the case that he really still should be allowed to attend the combine. Meanwhile, for his part, CSU’s Williams was arrested in 2017 for an altercation involving a woman to which he plead guilty to a harassment charge and received a deferred sentence. Williams is a mid-round prospect who had a breakout year in 2018 when he caught 96 passes for over 1,300 yards and 14 scores after transferring from Tennessee.
