Let’s make a deal

April 9, 2020

Let’s make a deal; or not … With the draft now just two weeks ago, it appears that a little buzz is starting to bubble up. There are reports today, for example, that Detroit, which holds the 3rd pick overall, is actively talking to teams about a possible trade down. Of course, teams talk all the time at this time of year and it actually isn’t clear at all whether the talking the Lions are supposedly involved in is exploratory or serious. It is also true that even if the Lions are serious about moving down they may not actually be in a position to consummate any deal until they get on the clock on the 23rd and the other teams know who is still available at #3. Cincinnati looks set to take LSU QB Joe Burrow with the top pick, while most analysts have Ohio State DE Chase Young penciled in at #2. However, the Redskins have hinted they would also consider trade offers, but new Redskins head coach Ron Rivera may have tipped their hand earlier this week in a local interview when he indicated that the Redskins would only be trading down if they felt that they would still get a player as impactful as the guy they get at #2. Given that there are not any more potentially impactful players in this draft than Young, it seems unlikely that the Redskins will be going all that far on the 23rd.
