QB Ewers dinged in ‘Horns rout … For those that don’t follow college football all that closely, Texas QB Quinn Ewers, one of the top 2-3 prospects at the position for the upcoming draft. was forced to leave last night’s 56-7 win over Texas-San Antonio when he suffered what is being reported as a strained oblique in his abdomen. And for the moment, there is no timetable on his return. Ewers, though, was hardly chopped liver when he did play against UTSA as he completed 14 of 16 passes for 185 yards and 2 scores before leaving with the injury, although he did also have a pick. Texas may even have a budding QB controversy on its hands – at least if the longhorns run into any adversity later in the season – as Arch Manning, the nephew of Peyton and Eli, was terrific stepping in for Ewers as he completed 9 of 12 passes for 223 yards and 4 scores, while he also showed off some of that legendary Manning speed and agility on a 67-yard TD gallop. For the record, the Longhorns host Louisiana-Monroe next week and then kick off their SEC schedule against a somewhat undermanned Mississippi State team the following weekend so they will have a little time to sort things out before they hit the meet of the SEC schedule.
In fact. it wasn’t necessarily a great weekend for the other two top QB prospects in the 2025 draft class. Both Carson Beck of Georgia and Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders won their games last night, but there were questions. Beck, for example, threw for only 160 yards and no scores on a 15-24 passing night as the #1 ranked Bulldogs eked out a 13-12 win over Kentucky. For his part, Sanders did throw for 310 yards and 4 scores in the Buffs’ 28-9 win over in-state rival Colorado State as he completed 36 of 49 passes, but most of it was dink-and-dunk stuff as he averaged only 6.3 yards per attempt and seemed to throw a lot of ducks on the night.
