Draft buzz

By | April 19, 2021

With draft ten days away trade talks appear to be heating up … It has been awfully quiet around the NFL when it comes to chatter about the 2021 draft, but with just ten days to go until the actual picking begins in earnest a little buzz is in fact starting to build. There are multiple media reports out today, for example, that Miami is now fielding calls about trading down again. And if you are starting to feel a little whiplash you are probably not alone as the Dolphins have already made three trades – up and down – in this year’s opening round. The Dolphins, of course, originally acquired the 3rd pick from Houston in the deal for OT Laremy Tunsil, then traded that pick to San Francisco for the 12th before trading back up to the 6th with Philadelphia. At the same time, though, its not exactly clear who the Dolphins are talking to and how far they would be willing to drop back if at all. There is some speculation that the Dolphins, who by all reports, hope to be able to select either Florida TE Kyle Pitts or LSU WR Ja’Marr Chase with the 6th pick, but are just covering all their bases should those two players be selected ahead of them. Its also possible that the guy the Dolphins really want is Pitts and are just blowing a little smoke in case some team picking behind them is considering a trade up into the top 5 to jump Miami for Pitts.

Meanwhile, Woody Paige of the Denver Gazette reported today that the Broncos have talked with Atlanta about a potential trade from the 9th pick to the 4th in order to acquire one of the QBs that San Francisco passes on at the 3rd pick which could be Ohio State’s Justin Fields or Trey Lance of North Dakota State if the 49ers do end up taking Alabama’s Mac Jones at that spot. Of course, Atlanta could ultimately opt to sit tight and grab one of the QBs for themselves as a potential successor to Matt Ryan, but the feeling around the league is that the Falcons are in fact leaning toward sticking with their long-time starter for one last run and would prefer to add picks to beef up a very depleted roster.
