Could Raiders move on at QB

December 27, 2022

Could Raiders move on at QB … They are starting to say the quiet part out loud in Las Vegas where there are growing questions whether the under-performing Raiders will move on from long-time starting QB Derek Carr at the end of the year and possibly look to select a replacement at the 2023 draft. In the short term, Raiders’ head coach Josh McDaniels wouldn’t commit to Carr finishing out the season as the team’s starter, saying that “for us to be able to win this time of the year and be productive offensively, you have to throw the ball better than what we’ve thrown it at times here over the last month-and-a-half.” Carr has thrown for over 3,500 yards and 24 scores so far this fall, but has completed only 61% of his passes and has 14 picks, including 9 in the past 5 weeks. It also may be the time for the Raiders to move on as Carr signed a 3-year, $12sM contract last off-season, but it includes an out at the end of this season in which the Raiders can move on while incurring just a $5.6 million dead cap hit. The 6-9 Raiders currently have the 9th pick in the 2023 selection order which would put then in range to get one of the top QBs in this year’s draft, although they might be tempted to try and move up a little closer to the top of the board.
