CFP expansion stalemate drags on

CFP expansion stalemate drags on … For those that follow college football closely, the two conferences that essentially run the business – the SEC and the Big 10 – remain deadlocked in a disagreement over future expansion of the CFP playoff structure. The Big 10 is adamant that the current 12-team format be doubled to 24 teams, while the SEC is holding out for a 16-team field. The SEC will be holding league meetings next week to discuss its options. The sense around college football, though, is that the Big 10 isn’t going to budge much, so the SEC may be ultimately forced into some kind of compromise arrangement. In fact, the Big 10 will reportedly consider an expansion to 16-teams for 2027, but only on the condition that the 24-team field is guaranteed for the future. For the record, the 2026 CFP playoffs will maintain the same basic 12-team format as this past year, although there may be some tweaks to who actually gets in after large year’s controversies.
