CB conundrum at 2019 draft

April 22, 2019

CB conundrum at the 2019 draft … One of the most interesting stories of the 2019 draft appears to be the collapse of the first-round CB class. Indeed, the buzz around the league is that no one should be surprised if no corner is selected within the first twenty picks despite the tendency of teams to somewhat overvalue the position early in the draft. That’s also despite the fact that CBs like Greedy Williams of LSU, Byron Murphy of Washington and Georgia’s Deandre Baker were all pushing for top ten grades not all that long ago in the process. None of the three, though, was all that impressive in the draft process such that we currently have them rated 27th, 29th and 32nd respectively on the final GBN Big Board which is designed to reflect as much as possible the current thinking among NFL teams. However, its not all bad news for teams looking to upgrade their cover corps at this weekend’s draft. indeed, while the top corners were slipping there are several CBs who have made big moves in the second round including Justin Layne of Michigan State, Joejuan Williams of Vanderbilt and Central Michigan’s Sean Bunting. In fact, the second may have been the most interesting round to compile when putting together that final big board because of the relatively large number of late risers. Other early second-day prospects who have made solid moves up draft boards around the league in recent weeks include Washington OT Kaleb McGary and Boston College OG Chris Lindstrom, both of whom could ultimately end up being selected in the opening round. Meanwhile, other second round prospects on the rise include Texas A&M C Erk McCoy, Virginia FS Juan Thornhill, Alabama State OT Tytus Howard, Iowa FS Amani Hooker, Missouri WR Emanuel Hall and Central Florida DT Trysten Hill.
