Reading the Tea Leaves; Part III

Interesting week shaping up with the draft now just 17 days away. San Francisco, which looks like the most likely team to try and trade up with Tennessee to acquire the top pick in this month’s draft, will have both of QBs Carson Wentz of North Dakota State and Cal’s Jared Goff in for on-site visits this weekend.… Read More »

There is a bit of a buzz this day after Lance Zierlein analyst was quoted on a local radio show as saying that Philadelphia had their ‘hearts set’ on being able to draft North Dakota State QB Carson Wentz at this month’s draft. Of course, it’s been no secret around the league that the Eagles have been… Read More »

Guess who’s coming to dinner; reading the on-site visit tea leaves …

With the pro day circuit winding up, pre-draft focus switches to the pre-draft visits teams are allowed to host. Every team is permitted to bring in up to 30 out-of-town prospects to their facilities for interviews and medical tests, although on-field workouts are not allowed. And while there is no known direct correlation between the players teams bring… Read More »

Ravens exec spills beans on mock drafts

One of the enduring questions regarding the draft is does anybody really pay any attention to the myriad of mock drafts that blight the internet landscape leading up to the draft. Well, if one is to believe Baltimore assistant G.M. Eric DeCosta, NFL teams at least are paying attention. DeCosta admitted during the Ravens’ pre-draft presser to surveying mock… Read More »

We are the champions!!

We are the champions!!!  … Don’t want to date ourselves, but we are going 6 decades as really dedicated sports fans going all the way back to the 1957 World Series between the New York Yankees and the Milwaukee Braves, the first sporing event in which we really cared who won. Over the years, people have learned not… Read More »

As the QB turns

Several people have commented that there just doesn’t seem to be as much draft buzz out there this year as, say, last year. And they are absolutely right. While its not quite dead this year the patient does appear to be on life support. Remember, in contrast last year, there were all the rumors about Chip Kelly and… Read More »

Pro day updates

Pro day updates … A #1 pick worthy performance at Iowa and the two best Fighting Camel prospects ever – no kidding!-  highlight today’s rundown of the latest pro day results.

RB Prospect Wear & Tear

Much of the de-emphasis on the RB position every year when the Draft rolls around, at least in recent history, is due in large part to the current pro emphasis on passing attacks. But there are some other major factors in play. With the seeming “equal” ability of more players these days chances of grabbing a good RB… Read More »

Baylor TE draws interest

Baylor BBaller to enter draft … Interesting story at Baylor where star basketball junior power forward Rico Gathers has confirmed that he has decided decided to enter the 2016 NFL draft as an underclassman. NAIA WR goes under 4.20

Record-setting 40 in regional combine … The NFL is still buzzing this morning about the 4.19 40 that Cumberlands’ WR Wendell Williams reportedly ran at the regional combine in Minneapolis yesterday. If true, that broke – well actually shattered – the existing 40-record of 4.24 that was established by Chris Johnson several years ago. Unfortunately we may never… Read More »

Clock issues continue: Hargreaves who was originally credited with a 4.52 has now been credited with a 4.41 unofficial time which is obviously a much better time for him.

Alabama guys up with DE/DT/5T Jarran Reed clocking a slowish 5.21 with a sluggish 1.84 split, while A’Shawn Robinson was almost the same at 5.20 and 1,84. In between Texas junior DT Hassan Ridgeway turned some heads with a 5.02 40 with a quick 1.72 split.

Real quick start for PSU DE Carl Nassib with a 1.63 10-yard split with a sort of okay for 5T DE 4.84 full clocking.

Not a great day time for Joey Bosa who had a quick enough split at 1.69 seconds but finished in 4.89. Same story for DeForest Buckner who runs a 5.06 with a 1,78 split.

The combine has posted the official 40 times for RBs which confirms that Georgia’s Keith Marshall had the fastest time at a very quick 4.31. Marshall, in fact, was the only back to break the 4.4 mark as San Jose State’s Tyler Ervin had the next best time at 4.41. Among the top backs, Ohio State’s Zeke Elliott… Read More »

Ole Miss OT Laremy Tunsil will not run today but will participate in positional drills

Nice run by Alabama C Ryan Kelly as he posts unofficial 5.05 40 with a 1.78 10-yard split.

The first group of offensive linemen have pretty much completed their 40-yard lumbers. The top unofficial times in the first group were posted by former UCLA Bruins Caleb Benenoch (4.97) and C Jake Brendel (4.99) along with Michigan State OT Jack Conklin (4.98). Other pretty good times from C Graham Glasgow (5.09), OT Darrell Greene (5.13), OT Le’Raven… Read More »

First BP numbers kind of ‘meh’

Bench press results for OL kind of average … The offensive linemen, who get ready to run at the combine in just a few moments, were also the first group to do the bench press yesterday but the results were kind of ‘meh’. Arizona State OG Christian Westerman topped the field with 34 reps at 225 pounds, and… Read More »
