Bonus coverage

Bonus coverage … Its actually going to be a pretty quiet weekend this week in college football without any true major match-ups. That said, there are still several rather intriguing games to watch this weekend with one of them on Thursday evening when Syracuse plays at Pittsburgh at 7:30 PM ET on ESPN. In fact, it was likely when the schedule maker put lined this one up for the mid-week, the prime purpose was to fill up a three hour of the mid-week ESPN schedule with a couple of middling college football teams. No one figured, though, that the two would be a combined 11-1 at this time with Pitt ranked 16th and the Orange 27th. It also gives folks to see what all the fuss about a couple of QBs is all about. SU’s Kyle McCord, for example, has literally taken off since transferring over from Ohio State after a couple of barely moderately productive seasons in Columbus. In fact, McCord is second in the country in passing yardage per game to only Miami’s Cam Ward. In the end, it may be that McCord just doesn’t have the pure arm strength to figure all that early in the draft, but playing a good team like Pitt on the road in prime time will us an opportunity to have a good look at his game. The Panthers also have a good QB in redshirt freshman Eli Holstein, arguably the top frosh passer in the country this fall as he’s ranked in the top 15 nationally in most prime passing categories. And lest anyone thinks Holstein simply got away from the major powers in the recruiting process, he actually originally signed with Alabama where he redshirted last season before transferring this fall with Jalen Milroe ensconced in the job there.
