Bowl beat continues … One would have thought that with both the national semi-finals and the big January 1st bowls in the book that would be it for college football until the national title game on January 11th. One would be wrong as there are 4 more bowls on the docket Saturday. In fact, there is a bit of a growing controversy in college football why these 4 games, of which 5 of the 8 teams on the schedule have 7-5 or worse records, are being played on January 2nd, while the national semi-finals were scheduled for New Year’s Eve when so many people are likely to be doing – well you know – something else. In fact, this year’s 2 semi-final games took a real beating with ratings off as much as 30% from last year when the 2 national semi-final games were played on New Year’s Day. ESPN which carries the college playoff games lobbied hard to play the actual playoffs on Saturday the 2nd, but were turned down flat by college football executives. A cynic might suggest that the college football people don’t want the playoff ratings to be too high because that would give more ammunition to those who want to expand the playoffs, which in turn would hurt the other bowls and the monopoly the power conferences enjoy over those games and the money they generate. Back to the four games on Saturday, while there’s not much to get excited about from a competitive standpoint, but there will be a number of very interesting prospects for the 2016 draft. Here’s our quick preview of who to watch in Saturday’s games with an eye toward the upcoming draft.
