| SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA (27/03) |
All but one NFL team
was represented at the USC pro day including a full contingent from
Jacksonville; also in attendance were G.M.s Phil Emery of Chicago, Oakland's
Reggie McKenzie
and Les Snead of St. Louis.
The featured attraction at the Trojans' workout was QB Matt Barkley who
finally got to work out for NFL teams earlier today after being
sidelined since Novermber with a strained shoulder. Barkley went
through a crisp, 45-minute scripted workout in which he threw 60 passes
and reportedly looked sharp on short and intermediate routes as he
displayed a quick release and good accuracy, but he also reportedly
struggled to get the ball downfield at times. For the record, Barkley
also ran the 40 in the low-to-mid 4.9 range. Bottom line seems to be
that it was a good, but not great workout, which probably leaves a lot
of teams about where they started the day. At the same time, WR Robert
Woods reportedly had a strong showing in the positional drills where he
looked smooth and confident, although he did drop one long pass from
Barkley. Meanwhile, C Khaled Holmes, who did not run at the combine,
had an announced 40 clocking of 5.36 seconds. DE Wes Horton, one of the
surprise omissions from the combine, managed 24 BP reps and was timed
in 4.87 seconds in the 40. S Drew McAllister had a decent 4.59 40
clocking, along with a 35" vertical, but only 15 reps in the BP. RB
Curtis McNeal also had a decent (35") vertical leap, while posting 18
BP reps and clocking a 4.62 40. |
| SOUTHERN METHODIST (27/03) |
Twenty-one teams were
represented at the SMU pro day including NY Jets head coach Rex Ryan
who was there ostesibly to see DE Margus Hunt. Hunt, the Mustangs only
lock to be selected in April elected to stand on his very good combine
numbers, but participated in positional drills that were reportedly run
by Ryan himself. Hunt's former linemate DT Aaron Davis (6-2, 291) had a
very good workout as he had a 34" vertical, posted 34 reps in the BP
and ran a very quick 40 in under 4.8 seconds which included a 1.65
second 10-yard split. Davis also posted times of 4.44 in the short
shuttle and 7.50 in the 3-cone drill, both of which would have been
among the leaders at DT at the combine. OLB Ja'Gared Davis (6-0, 238)
ran the 40 in around 4.80 seconds, but had only in the BP, while ILB
Taylor Reed ((5-11, 240), had a nice 4.70 40 clocking along with
shuttle times of 4.22 in the SS and 7.22 in the 3-cone drill, both of
which had been among the top 10 among LBs at the combine. For the
record, QB Kyle Padron (6-3, 221), who played at Eastern Washington
last fall, worked out with his former SMU teammates at the school's pro
day. |
| SOUTH CAROLINA (27/03) |
Amazingly, South
Carolina RB Marcus Lattimore actually too k part in some drills less
than 6 months after suffering a devastating knee injury that threatened
to end his career. Lattimore still has a long way to go but drew
arguably the biggest round of applause any pro day player received this
spring just by being there. Meanwhile, Lattimore's former backup and
later replacement Kenny Miles (5-8.5, 192) had a decent day running the
40 in an announced time of 4.50 secnds while posting a 36.5" vertical.
WLB Damario Jeffery (6-3.5, 241) also impressed with leaps of 37" in
the vertical and a 10-9 braod jump, while running a 4.73 40, although
his bench press of just 16 reps was below average for the position.
Wide-body NT Byron Jerideau (6-1, 334) also impressed
with a 5.12 40 clocking and 37 BP reps. .On the
other hand, stumpy MLB Shaq Wilson (5-10.5, 239) couldn't break the 5.0
mark in the 40. Same story for DE Aldrick Fordham (6-3.5,
273) who clocked a 5.01 40. Rangy WR DL Moore (6-4, 201) ran a
4.61 40, but only managed a 32" vertical and just 6 reps in the BP>
CB Akeem Auguste (5-10, 186) had a very athletic 3" vertical and posted
18 reps in the BP but pnly ran a 4.67 40. |
| LSU (27/03) |
Not surprisingly,
there's a full house at the LSU pro day including Giants' G.M. Jerry
Reese and Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin. Among former Tigers who
were at the combine, but didn't work out fully DEs Sam Montgomery and
Lavar Edwards managed 22 and 21 reps respectively in the BP, while CB
Tharold Simon posted less than spectacular times of 4.41 in the short
shuttle and 7-flat in the 3-come dill. However, Montgomery was
hoping to lower his disappointing 40 time (4.81) from Indy, but didn't
again running the plus-4.8 range. Meanwhile, RB Spencer
Ware didn't run the 40, but had times of 4.33 in the short shuttle and
7.24 in the 3-cone drill, while posting a very good 36.5" vertical. Among
LSU players not at the combine WR
Russell Shephard was solid enough as he ran an official 4.51 40 and
posted a 38.5" vertical; however, Shephard only managed 8 reps in the
BP, while his times in the short shuttle (4.32) and 3-cone drill (7.04)
were nothing special. DT Josh Downs (6-0, 291) did 33 reps in the BP
and ran the 40 in 5.31 seconds, while G/T Josh Dworaczyk (6-6, 300) had
a 5.28 40 clocking and did 19 reps in the BP. TE Chase Clement (6-5,
256) had 22 BP reps but didn't run all that well with a 5.07 40
clocking. |
| NORTH CAROLINA (26/03) |
Scouts from 30 of the
32 teams were in Chapel Hill for the Tar Heels including head coach Gus
Bradley and G.M. David Caldwell of Jacksonville, whose Jaguars have the
2nd pick overall at next month's draft, along with Cincinnati head
coach Marvin Lewis and G.M.s Martin Mayhew of Detroit and John Idzik of
the New York Jets. OG Jonathan Cooper, the highest rated UNC prospect
for the upcoming draft, stood on his excellent combine results and only
took part in positional drills where he again looked smooth and
explosive. Same story for RB Gio Bernard, DT Sly Williams and LB Kevin
Reddick who kept their combine results. OT Brnna Williams, who didn't
run at the combine because he is rehapping from surgery to repair a
torn labrum that caused him to miss the final four games of the 2012
season, ran a very respectable (for a RT prospect) 40 in the mid-5.2
range. Among former Tar Heels not at
the combine, WR Jheranie Boyd, a sometime big-play threat who also runs
track at UNC, but played little in 2012 because of a leg injury, turned
in one of the most athletic perfomances on the pro day calenday as he
ran the 40 in the 4.4 range, had a vertical leap of at least 41.5" (the
UNC vertical measuring device didn't go any higher) and a broad jump of
11-0. |
| TEXAS (26/03) |
Texas welcomed an old
friend at their pro day when former Longhorns star QB Vince Young, who
has been out of football after being released by Buffalo prior to the
start of the 2012 season, threw for about 30 minutes for pro scouts in
hopes of making a comeback. Meanwhile, FS Kenny Vaccaro did participate
in some positional drills, but was limited by a hip flexor tweaked in
training last week. The big-name ex-Longhord who did not run at the
combine was DE Alex Okafor who didn‘t do much to allay concerns that he
lacks real explosion as his unofficial hand-timed 40 clocking barely
cracked the 4.90 mark. Okafor, though, did have a very good 36-inch
vertical, while his time of 4.40-seconds in the short shuttle would
have been among the top 10 at the position at the combine. At the same
time, KR D.J. Monroe (5-8, 175), who was not at the combine, ran the 40
in an unofficial hand-timed time of just under 4.40 seconds; he also
had a 36-inch vertical, but his time of 4.53 seconds in the short
shuttle was very slow for a smaller guy. |
| DUKE (25/03) |
The biggest news at the Duke pro day was who wasn't there. QB Sean Renfree, who threw for almost 10,000 career yards and is thought to be one of the more promising late-round QBs in the 2013 draft, is still rehabbing from surgery to repair a torn pectoralis major muscle in his throwing arm that was suffered late in the Blue Devils' bowl game. It also does not appear as if Renfree will be healthy enough to work out before the draft. |
| TENNESSEE STATE (22/03) |
TSU junior RB Trabis Ward hoped to make an impression on reps from 19 NFL teams, but had a somewhat disappointing day as the 5-10, 200-pounder was barely able to crack the 4.8 mark in the 40, managed just 14 reps in the BP and had a time of 4.61 seconds in the 3-cone drill, which would have been outside the top 15 among backs at the combine. |
| BOISE STATE (21/3) |
Former Broncos’ CB
Jamar Taylor, a rising star in this year’s draft class, and RB DJ
Harper both reportedly were solid positional drills. Harper also retook
most of the physical tests and reportedly timed better in the shuttle
runs than at the combine although his 40-time appears to have been
about the same at around 4.52. Among Boise State players not at the
combine FB Dan Paul (6-1, 262) posted a very good vertical jump of
37.5”, posted 30 reps in the BP and ran the 40 in a hand-timed 4.76
seconds which likely translates to something in the low 4.8 range once
adjusted. LB JC Percy, who led the Broncos in tackles last fall,
measured in at 233 pounds, up ten from his listed figure, and ran the
40 in the 4.75-4.80 range once adjusted. Meanwhile, neither CB Jerrell
Gavins nor DT Mike Atkinson were able to run. Gavins, who measured in
at under 5-8, didn't run because of a tweaked hamstring, while the
Canadian-born Atkinson is still rehabbing from a torn ACL suffered in
November, although he did post an impressive 32 reps in the BP. |
| KENTUCKY (21/03) |
As many as 25 NFL teams
were represented at the UK pro day where OG Larry Warford showed some
versatility by also working out at C; indeed, versatility was the name
of the game in Lexington as 6-4, 240-pound QB Morgan Newton got most of
his looks as a TE. |
| GEORGIA (21/03) |
There was a full house
at the Georgia pro day earlier today where OLB
Jarvis Jones was the featured attraction. The early reports on Jones'
day, though, haven't been overwhelming. Indeed, Jones was clocked in a
very pedestrian time of around 4.9 seconds in the 40, and reportedly
didn't look very athletic in other drills. Indeed, Jones only managed a
30.5 vertical and a 9-3 broad jump while he posted 20 reps in the BP
none of which were anywhere near the leaders at the position at the
combine. Other former Bulldogs who didn't run at the combine
included safety Baccari Rambo who had a hand-timed 4.59 40 clocking,
while defensive linemen John Jenkins had a decent time in the
mid-5.2 range, while 5-tech DE Arby ones clocked in the 5.15 area.
Meanwhile, CB Sanders Comings, who didn't left at the combine racked up
a respectable 23 reps in the BP, while NT Kwame Geathers had a somewhat
disappointing (for a 345-pound guy) 21 reps. Among former Dawgs not at
the combine, CB Branden Smith (5-10, 172) had a good day as he ran in
the 4.45 range in the 40, while posting a 34-inch vertical. OLB
Christian Robinson (6-2, 233) wasn't as impressive as he could only
clock a 4.95 40 while recording a 30-inch vertical and 20 reps in the
BP. |
| PRINCETON (20/03) |
DE Mike Catapano (6-4,
271), who played well at the Shrine game, but wasn't invited to the
combine, turned in a strong, athletic performance at the Tigers pro day
as he ran the 40 in 4.75 seconds, had 33 reps in the BP, along with a
37.5" vertical and shuttle times of 4.31 in the SS and 7.09 in the
3-cone. Both those latter times would have been among the leaders among
DE at the combine with the 3-cone sandwiched between times for Margus
Hunt and Ziggy Ansah. |
| BAYLOR (20/03) |
WRs Terrance Williams
and Lanear Sampson, who were both at the combine, reportedly looked
good in positional drills and caught everything thrown their way.
Meanwhile, C Ivory Wade (6-4, 313), who was not in Indy, had a decent
day posting 27 reps in the BP and running in the 5.15-5.20 range over
40 yards. Meanwhile, DBs Mike Hicks and Chance Casey impressed with
some athletic numbers. Hicks, for example, had a 39" vertical, ran the
40 in around 4.55 seconds and had times of 4.03 in the short shuttle
and 6.68 in the 3-cone drill, both of which would have been the second
fastest among safeties at the combine. For his part, Casey (5-11, 185)
ran the 40 in the mid-4.4 range while posting a 40.5" vertical.
|
| FRESNO STATE (20/03) |
Working out in front of
reps from 19 NFL teams, both FS Phillip Thomas and RB Robbie Rouse
improved somewhat on disappointing 40 times from the combine. Thomas,
for example, cut a few 100ths from his final 4.65 clocking in
Indianapolis, while the diminutive Rouse reportedly clocked in the 4.65
range at the Bulldogs pro day which still isn't much to write home
about, but is a definite improvement on his near disastrous 4.8 time at
the combine. Meanwhile, safety-sized OLB Shawn Plummer (6-0, 203) ran
the 40 in the 4.65 range while posting 25 reps in the BP, while fellow
LB Travis Brown (6-1, 230) clocked in the 4.75 range in the 40 and had
18 BP reps. |
| TENNESSEE (20/03) |
While former teammates
Justin Hunter and Cordarelle Patterson were largely to stand on their
solid numbers from the combine, Vols' WR Zack Rogers, who wasn't
invited to the combine, did a full program at the Tennessee pro day.
And Rogers (6-0, 182) didn't disappoint running the 40 in the mid-4.5
with quicker times in the agility drills of 4.34 in the short shuttle
and 6.72 in the 3-cone drill. in fact, the latter time would have been
among the top 5 at the position at thye combine. On the other hand, DB
Prentiss Waggner (6-1.5, 190) had a mostly disappointing day as he was
only able to run the 40 in the mid-4.7 range while posting equally slow
times of 4.68 in the short shuttle and 7.19 in the 3-cone drill.
Meanwhile, FB Ben Bartholomew (6-2, 245) had a respectable 40 run in
the 4.75-4.80 range, along with times of 4.34 in the SS and 7.34 in the
3-cone drill; he also had 30 reps in the BP; DT Darrington Sentimore
(6-1.5, 290) ran the 40 in around 5.2 seconds with times of 4.75
seconds in the SS and 8.39 in the 3-cone drill, while posting 26 reps
in the BP. |
| NC STATE (20/03) |
At North Carolina
State, OG Zach Allen, who didn't run at the combine posted a 40-time in
the mid-5.30 range, while OT R.J. Mattes (6-6, 321), who didn't get a
combine invite, was about a tenth faster with a 40-clockin in the
5.25-5.30 territory. There was some speed at the Wolfpack workout,
though as both CB CJ Wilson (5-11, 193) and WR Tobias Palmer (5-10,
178) were clocked in the 4.4 range once the time had been adjusted
electronically. Wilson also had a solid 37-inch vertical. RB Jon Fisher
(5-9, 197), who never played much at NC State, also showed some
intriguing athleticism as he ran in the 4.45 range and had a 38-inch
vertical. Meanwhile, S Brandon Bishop (6-1, 208) had a 40 clocking in
the 4.65-4.70 range, while DE Brian Slay (6-2, 261) ran in the 4.9 arae
and C Camden Wentz (6-3, 305) had 27 reps in the BP and timed the 40 in
about 5.4 seconds. |
| CENTRAL FLORIDA (20/03) |
At the UCF pro day, RB
Latavius Murray had a strong as the 6-2, 223-pounder reportedly ran the
40 in a respectable 4.55-type time while posting 22 reps in the
BP; at the same time, WR Quincy McDuffie turned in a 40-yard dash in
the 4.50 range, while S Kemal Ishmael had jumps of 35.5-inches in the
vertical and 10-3 in the broad jump while posting 21 reps in the BP,
but ran only in the 4.65-4.70 range for the 40. |
| UTAH (20/03) |
All but one NFL team
was represented at the Utah pro day where NFL personnel folks finally
got a chance to see DT Star Lotulelei work out. And by all accounts,
Lotulelei was able to put to rest a few more doubts about his health
with a strong performance at the Utes' pro day earlier today. Lotulelei
measured in at 6-4, 314 and ripped off 38 reps in the bench press which
would have tied for the lead among defensive linemen at the combine.
Lotulelei didn't run quite as well posting times of around 5.30 for the
40, along with shuttle times of 4.65 seconds in the short shuttle and
7.65 in the 3-cone drill. Both the latter times were about average for
DTs at the combine. By way of contrast, Lotulelei was actually about a
tenth faster than Florida's Sharrif Floyd, the other top-rated DT in
this year's draft class, but was 2-3 tenths slower in the 3-cone drill.
Lotulelei has one more huge hurdle to clear at the follow-up medical
testing in Indianapolis on April 5-6 when players with health issues at
the combine are re-tested. Lotulelei was considered to be a top 10
prospect heading into the combine, but was sent home from Indianapolis
because of a heart irregularity. While he was cleared for the pro day,
it does not appear as if the medical people yet know why the problem
occurred which means the issue could continue to be a red flag as the
draft approaches. While Lotulelei was doing his thing, WR/KR Reggie Dunn
(5-10, 178) also created a stir when he ran a couple of hand-timed 40s
in under 4.3 seconds. Dunn, who had 5 KO returns for scorse in his
career including 4 last year, also had a 36-inch vertical and for a
small uy an impressive 17 reps in the BP, while also posting times of
4.36 seconds in the short shuttle and 6.85 in the 3-cone drill, which
weren't as quick as his straight-line speed. |
| FLORIDA STATE (19/03) |
All 32 NFL teams were
represented at the FSU pro day where QB E.J. Manuel reportedly threw
the ball very well. Not surprisingly, Manuel stood on his solid combine
results and did not participate in the physical drills as did the
Seminoles other top prospects including DE Bjoern Werner, CB Xavier
Rhodes and OT Menelik Watson. That Manuel's grade appears to be on the
rise is re-inforced by the fact that he has been invited to New York to
the draft. Of note in positional drills, though,
Rhodes struggled with his footing at times and reportedly didn't catch
the ball all that cleanly which could lower his grade among some teams
who view his as exclusively a press corner. Injured DE Tank Carradine,
who is still rehabbing from a torn ACL suffered late last season,
didn't run but did post an impressive 32 reps in the bench press.
Meanwhile, OLB Brandon Jenkins, who missedmuch of the 2012 season with
a Lisfranc foot injury and still isn't 100% said wha the heck and
participated in all the drills, but only reportedly ran the 40 in the
5-flat range. Meanwhile, Werner reportedly impressed with his
athleticism and flexibility when asked to do several LB drills.
MLB Vince Williams, who was not invited to the combine despite a very
good showing at the Senior Bowl, weighed in at 6-1, 235, close to 20
pounds under his playing weight last fall, and then reportedly tested
well in the drills. |
| VIRGINIA (19/03) |
The star of the
Cavaliers workout was unheralded WLB LaRoy Reynolds after he ran the 40
in the mid-to-high 4.5 range (unadjusted), while posting leaps of
37-inches in the vertical and 10-5 in the broad jump, along with 28
reps in the bench press. While he's hardly a household name even at
Virginia, Reynolds was a reasonably productive player who had over 250
career tackles including 90 in 2012. Meanwhile, OT Oday Aboushi
improved his bench press numbers from the combine from 17 reps to 21,
1lthough that's still not very impressive for an offensive lineman. |
| RICE (18/03) |
Big turnout of 30 NFL
teams at the Rice pro day where TE Vance McDonald stood on his combine
numbers but did participate in positional drills where he looked very
smooth and athletic, although he did drop several passes. Meanwhile, fellow TE Luke Willson (6-5.5, 250), one of the top
Canadian prospects in the 2013 draft class, also had a very good day as
he ran the 40 in the 4.55-4.60 range,
while posting jumps of 38-inches in the vertical and 10-2 in the broad
jump. Willson also had times of 4.28 seconds in the short shuttle and
7.04 in the 3-cone drill, while he posted 23 reps in the BP; for the
record, all those figures were among the leaders in the position at the
combine. Same story for WR Sam McGuffie,
who was originally a touted RB recruit at Michigan before returning
home and ultimately switching to slot receiver; McGuffie, who also ran
track at Rice reportedly had a couple of sub-4.4 40 hand-timed
clockings as well as a 39.5-inch vertical while posting 26 reps in the
BP. |
| HOUSTON (18/03) |
No question the best
story of the pre-draft process was the fact that Houston CB D.J. Hayden
(5-11.5, 190) was able to work at the Cougars’ pro day. Hayden suffered
a near fatal
injury back in November when he tore the main vein to his heart after
colliding with a teammate at practice. And Hayden took advantage of the
second chance when the an the 40 in just over 4.4 seconds while posting
a 33.5-inch vertical. Hayden likely is still a long-shot to be drafted
because
of the uncertainty over his health but at least is getting checked out
as he reportedly has 4 private workouts scheduled along with 7
pre-draft visits. Meanwhile, LB Phillip Steward reportedly ran the 40
in the 4.8 range while posting a very respectable 26 reps in the bench
press and a 34.5-inch vertical. |
| INDIANA (18/03) |
At Indiana, DT Adam
Replogle, who wasn’t invited to the combine despite a solid 2012 season
in which he had 71 tackles including 5 sacks, may have generated some
second looks for himself as ripped off 38 reps in the bench press, ran
the 40 in just over low 5.0 range and posted a 31-inch vertical. Fellow
DTs Larry Black and Will Matte also posted some decent numbers. Like
Repogle, Black reportedly ran the 40 in the 5.05-5.10 range, but
managed only 22 reps in the BP. Mate on the other hand benched 31 reps
but was slower with a 40 clocking in the 5.3 range. |
| ARKANSAS (15/03) |
Most of the Hogs' top
prospects including QB Tyler Wilson stood on their combine numbers; the
one exception was WR Cobi Hamilton who ran the 40 in hopes of bettering
a disappointing time of 4.56, but was actually a tad slower, even
before the time was adjusted. There also wasn't a whole lot to get
excited about with the former Arkansas players not at the combine. RB
Dennis Johnson (5-7.5, 196) ran an unadjusted 40 time which likely
would be in the 4.55 range electronically, while posting 21 reps in the
BP and a 32.5-inch vertical; he also had shuttle times of 4.53 seconds
in the SS and 7.13 in the 3-cone drill which are actually very
sluggish, especially for a small back, however, several of the shuttle
times released by the school didn't make much sense so its hard to know
what to make of them. RB Ronnie Wingo, the Hogs' big (6-2.5, 231)
situational back, also ran the 40 in an unadjusted time of 4.46, while
posting in 19 reps in the bench press. OT Jason Peacock (6-4, 308, 33"
arms) had a 40 clocking close to 5.4, while notching just 19 BP reps.
SS Ross Rasner (6-0.5, 207) ran the 40 in 4.54 seconds with a 33.5"
vertical and 21 BP reps. CB Darius Winston (5-10.5, 12) was another
former Hog with a 4.46 unadjusted 40 clocking; he also had a very
athletic 40" vertical but managed just 8 reps in the BP. DE/OLB
Tenarius Wright (6-2, 240) ran the 40 in 4.73 and did 18 reps in the BP. |
| SAN JOSE STATE (15/03) |
As many as 24 NFL teams were represented at the SJS pro day where TE Ryan Otten, who was not able to work out at the combine because of a staph infection, had a strong outing as he ran the 40 in an unadjusted 4.68 seconds which likely translates to something in the 4.75 range electronically. The rangy Otten also reportedly looked good catching the ball. On the other hand, DE/OLB Travis Johnson, the school's all-time sack leader who was snubbed by the combine committee, didn't test all that well as the 6-1, 240-pounder was only able to run in the 4.9 range for the 40. |
| OREGON STATE (15/03) |
At the Beavers pro day
WR Markus Wheaton and CB Jordan Poyer did positional drills but for the
most part stood on their combine results, although Poyer did improve
his bench press total from the combine from 8 to 11, although even that
figure would have been at the low end of corners in
Indianapolis. Of OSU players not at the combine, RT Colin Kelly (6-5, 298) ran a slowish 40 in the 5.4-5.5 range, but
otherwise was reasonably solid posting 28 reps in the BP, jumps of
29.5-inches in the vertical and 9-3 in the broad jump, while recording
times of 4.52 in the short-shuttle and 7.27 in the the three-cone
drill, both of which would have been among the leaders at the combine. The other guy who caught scouts attention at the
OSU pro day was little used CB Brian Watkins who may get some looks as
a potential free agent special teamer after he ran the 40 in under 4.5
seconds, had a 38.5 vertical, a 10-2 broad jump while posting 18 reps
in the BP. |
| NORTHWESTERN STATE (15/03) |
Several teams including New Orleans, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Green Bay and the Giants were at the Northwestern State pro day mostly to check out physical SS Jamall White (5-11, 206) who had 71 tackles and 3 picks in 2012. However, White didn't test out all that well as he only ran the 40 in the 4.65-4.70 range and had a 34.5 vertical, while posting 20 reps in the BP. |
| OREGON (14/03) |
Representatives from 27 NFL teams were in Eugene for the Ducks’ workout including a large contingent from Kansas City including head coach Andy Reid and G.M. John Dorsey as well as the entire Chiefs‘ defensive coaching staff. Not quite clear who the Chiefs were there to see as OLB Dion Jordan did not work out as he is recovering from shoulder sugery. Same for SS John Boyett who won‘t work out until a private seesion on April 10 because of a knee injury. Meanwhile, Kiko Alonso, who chose not to run at the combine ran the 40- in an unadjusted 4.74 seconds which probably translates into something closer to 4.8 electronically. Alonso also had a 30.5-inch vertical jump and was timed in 4.18 seconds for the short shuttle and 6.93 in the three-cone drill, both of which would have been in the top 3 LBs at the combine; in fact, Alonso‘s SS time would have tied Zavier Gooden for the top LB time in Indy; meanwhile, RB Kenjon Barner reportedly looked very good catching the ball out of the backfield. Fellow LB Michael Clay (5-11.5, 230), who was not at the combine ran the 40 in an unadjusted time just over 4.75 seconds, but like Alonso was very quick in the agility drills posting what would have been the fastest times for LBs at the combine of 4.17 seconds in the SS and 6.73 in the three-cone drill. Clay also had 23 reps on the bench press. |
| NEVADA (14/03) |
Nevada actually sent a decent contingent to the combine this year including S Duke Williams, CB Khalid Wooton, OG Chris Barker and RB CJ Anderson and all pretty much stood on their combine results. TE Zach Sudfield (6-7, 253), who did not get an invite to the combine, though, did a full workout in which he ran the in the 4.75 (unadjusted) range, while posting tmes of 4.48 seconds in the short shuttle and 7-flat in the three-cone drill time; the latter would have been second among TEs at the combine while the former would have been in the top ten. However, the lanky Sudfield only managed 11 reps in the BP. |
| CALIFORNIA (14/03) |
WR Keenan Allen never planned on running the 40 at the Cal pro day, but did hope to particiapte in pass-receiving drills. However, in the end Allen decided not to particiapte at all after tweaking his balky knee in warm-ups, although he did take part in a hand-eye coordination drill at the request of a scout from Minnesota during which he caught balls thrown from just a few yards away while kneeling on the ground. Meanwhile, RB Isi Sofele, who was not at the combine had a decent day posting an unadjusted hand-timed 4.49 in the 40, along with a times of 6.82 seconds in the 3-cone drill (which would have been in the top 5 among backs at the combine) and 4.22 in the short shuttle; he also managed a respectable 20 reps in the BP and had a 34 inch vertical. |
| WEST VIRGINIA (14/03) |
Early reports from the
Mountaineers pro day suggest that QB Geno Smith looked very good as he
went through a scripted 64 pass session that included a lot of
downfield throws; 28 teams were represented including Jacksonville and
Buffalo which both had their G.M.s in Morgantown. In fact, the Jaguars
had a long private meeting with Smith after his workout while Buffalo
will work Smith out on March 22nd. Somewhat surprisingly, Arizona was
one of the 4 teams that didn't have anyone at the WVU pro day.
Meanwhile, Pittsburgh
and Minnesota both reportedly showed the most interest in WR Tavon
Austin. |
| MICHIGAN (14/03) |
Early results from the
Michigan pro day have WR Roy Roundtree running the 40 in the
low-to-mid-4.5 range, while posting a 34-inch vertical and a 10-1 broad
jump; neither of the latter two figures, though are necessarily very
good. SS Jordan Kovacs (5-10.5, 205) ran the 40 in the mid-4.6 range,
but was
stronger in the other drills with a 35-inch vertical and a 10-4 broad
jump along with shuttle times of 4.19 in the SS and 6.62 in the
3-cone-drill. At the same time, DT Will Campbell (6-4.5, 311) posted an
impressive 35 reps
in the bench press, but wasn't as quick running the 40 in over 5.20
seconds, while posting a slow time of 4.71
seconds in the SS and a more impressive time of 7.28 in the 3-cone
drill that actually would have been second fastest among OL at the
combine. OG Patrick Omameh (6-4, 303, but with 34-inch arms) ran the 40
in the 5.20 range (unadjusted), had a 27-inch vertical and managed 22
reps in the BP.lifts of 225 pounds on the bench press. Meanwhile, former Michigan QB Denard Robinson participated
in RB drills and in the return game as well as working out at
receiver. |
| KANSAS STATE (13/03) |
Fifteen NFL teams sent coaches and staff to watch the K-State workouts where LB Arthur Brown (6-0.5, 236) ran the 40 in an unadjusted time of 4.67 which usually translates to an electronic time in the 4.75 range. Brown also recorded a 32.5-inch vertical and had 21 reps in the BP, while posting times of 4.31 seconds in the short shuttle and 7.07 isn the three-cone drill; Brown's 3-cone time would have been 5th among LBs at the combine while his SS was also a top ten figure. |
| COLORADO (13/03) |
OT David Bahktiari, the
Buffs' best prospect for the upcoming draft, stood on his solid combine
outing, while TE Nick Kasa, who ran the 40 in 471 at the combine, added
times of 4.45 in the short shuttle and 7.18 in the 3-cone drill, both
of which would have been within the top 10 times at the position at the
combine. Meanwhile, S Ray Polk, who only played in 7 games in 2012
because of a wrist injury, impressed with an unadjusted 40 clocking of
4.43, along with a 39-inch vertical and 19 reps in the BP, although his
times in the short shuttle (4.36) and 3-cone drill (7.08) would not
have been near the leaders at the position at the combine. DT
Will Pericak was credited with an unadjusted 40 clocking of 5.15,
with a relatively slow 1.87 second 10-yard split; Pericak also
managed 24 reps in the bench press and shuttle times of 4.57 in the SS
and 7.63 in the 3-cone drill; the former was actually pretty good for a
big DT while the latter is about average. Fellow DT Erc Richter turned
some heads with 48 reps in the bench press, but was very slow in the
running aspects of the workout including a 40-time over 5.3 seconds. |
| ALABAMA 13/03 |
All NFL teams were
represened at the Alabama pro day, however, the Tide weren't able to
field a full contingent of prospects as CB Dee Milliner and RB Eddie
Lacy did not work out at all, while C/G Barrett Jones was limited to
the bench press. For the record, Jones managed a very respectable 27
reps in the BP, but that likely will be all NFL teams have to go him as
it is considered highly unlikely he will be able to run before the
draft because of a foot injury. The one Alabama player who stood out
today was DT Jesse Williams who reportedly ran the 40 in the low 4.9
range; Williams also had good times of 4.78 in the short shuttle and
7.69 in the 3-cone drill, while posting 30 reps in the bench press,
although there expectations that Williams would challenge the all-time
record in the discipline. The rest of the story wasn't as good for
Alabama. LB Nico Johnson, for example, ran the 40 in around 4.8
seconds, while postig a slowish short shuttle time of 4.47. Meanwhile,
TE Michael Williams, one of the most surprising omissions from the
combine maybe showed why when he timed a ridiculously slow 5.4 in the
40. In fact, that time looked like a misprint, but Williams' times of
4.90 in the short shuttle and 8.10 in the 3-cone drill which were also
very, very, very slow. In comparison, most of the top TEs at the
combine clocked under 7.0 in the 3-cone drill. |
| OKLAHOMA (13/03) |
All but two NFL teams
had reps at the OU workout with two of those teams (Pittsburgh and
Jacksonville) sending their QB coach to check out QB Landry Jones. For
the record, Jones had a decent performance as he went through a
scripted workout that had him throwing 70 passes of which 66 were
completed with only one reportedly being adjudged to be a bad pass.
Interestingly, no team sent an offensive line coach to check out OT
Lane Johnson. Meanwhile, WR Kenny Stills and Tony Jefferson, both of
whom ran at the combine, took part in the agility drills, but neither
posted times that would have all that close to the leaders at the
combine. |
| MICHIGAN STATE (13/03) |
All but three NFL teams were represented at the Spartans pro day including Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin who spent a lot of time with RB Le'Veon Bell and TE Dion Sims. Both stood on their combine numbers, while DE William Gholston reportedly took a little off his disappointing plus-4.9 40 time at the combine as he reported ran under just under the 4.9 mark. Meanwhile, CB Johnnie Adams kept his combine 40 time, but clocked times of 6.94 in the three-cone drill, while posting a vertical of 33 inches, although neither is particularly impressive. At the same time, 220-pound RB Larry Caper only ran the 40 in 4.65 seconds, but posted efforts that would have been among the top 15 at the position at the combine including a 35-inch vertical, 23 reps in the bench press, along with times of 4.31 in the short shuttle and 6.97 in the 3-cone drill. OG Chris McDonald, who also took some snaps at C, ran the 40 in the mid-5.0 range, while posting 31 reps in the BP. CB Mitchell White also showed some quicks with a 40-time in the mid-4.4 range, along with times of 6.73 in the three-cone and a 4.07 in the 20-yard shuttle, both of which would have been close to the top 5 figures among corners at the combine. |
| RUTGERS (13/03) |
Every team had at leastone rep at the Rutgers pro day where both LB Khasem Greene (4.71) and RB Jawan Jamison (4.68) were hoping to improve on somewhat disappointing 40 times from the combine; for the record neither was able to significantly cut much of anything from their respective clocking. Among former Scarlet Knights not at the combine, CBs Brandon Jones and Marcus Cooper had solid workouts. The 6-2, 191-pound Jones, for example, ran the 40 in an adjusted time in the low 4.5 range, while Cooper (6-2, 192) who was only a part-time starter at Rutgers was even faster with a 40 clocking of just under 4.5. Cooper also had an athletic vertical leap of 39 inches. At the same time, SS Duron Harmer (6-2, 196) was timed in the mid-to-high 4.5 range for the 40. |
| FLORIDA (12/03) |
All 32 teams were represented at the Gators workout including head coaches Mike Tomlin of Pittsburgh and Gus Bradley of Jacksonville who brought along GM David Caldwell. The most notable outing was turned in by OLB Jelani Jenkins outside linebacker Jelani Jenkins, who did not participate in the combine after undergoing foot surgery late last season. Jenkins measured in at 6-0.5 and 237 pounds and was timed in the 4.7 range for the 40. For the record, Gators' T Sharrif Floyd, TE Jordan Reed and LB Lerentee McCray, none of who ran at the combine, will do so at a special pro day in Gainesville on March 22nd. |
| UCLA (12/03) |
Both RB Jonathan
Franklin and DE Datone Jones reportedly looked good in positional
drills, while TE Joseph Fauria reportedly ran the 40 in the 4.90
range. |
| GREAT LAKES (11/03) |
Interesting concept at Grand Valley State which held a pro day today for players from the DII Great Lakes Conference. Grand Valley State WR Charles Johnson made a huge statement as the 6-2, 215-pounder ran in the 4.4 range for the 40, while also posting impressive jumps of 39.5 inches in the vertical and 11-1 in the broad jump along with a so-so 14 reps in the bench press. For the record, Johnson caught 72 passes for 1,200 yards and 16 touchdowns last season, but did have some off-field issues early in his career that saw him bounce around several schools before settling in for his final two years at GVSU. Other Great Lakes' players of note in Monday's workout included Hillsdale RB Joe Glendening who ran the 40 in the 4.5 range, while Grand Valley State OG Tim Lelito (6-3, 308) managed 29 reps in the bench press and a 33-inch vertical. |
| CENTRAL MICHIGAN (11/03) |
OT Eric Fisher, who is
a serious candidate to be the #1 pick this year, was the main draw at
the CMU pro day which drew scouts from 26 NFL teams. That included 3
reps from the home-town Lions including senior personnel exec Brian
Xanders, while Arizona ha two reps including offensive co-ordinator
Harold Goodwin. Fisher's workout was run by Jacksonville offensive lin
coach George Yarno. Fisher stood on his outstanding combine performance
and did only positional drills at the pro day, but reportedly was again
smooth and athletic. Meanwhile, SS Jahlel Addae reportedly had an
impressive 38.5 inch vertical, but only ran in the mid-to-high 4.6
range in the 40. |
| TEXAS A&M (08/03) |
All 32 teams were represented at the Aggies pro day with head coaches Dennis Allen of Oakland and the Jets' Rex Ryan in the crowd. Needless to say OT Luke Joeckel, the consensus favorite to be the #1 pick overall when all is said and done at the 2013 draft, was the prime attraction although he only participated in positional drills. Meanwhile, DE Damontre Moore, arguably the most disappointing guy at the combine, did not try to improve on that disastrous 4.95 4 clocking as he continues to deal with a balky hamstring, but did up his bench press count from an almost equally disastrous 12 reps to 19. Moore also posted times of 4.31 in the short shuttle and 7.05 in the 3-cone drill, both of which would have been close to top 10 among DEs and LBs at the combine. RB Christine Michael also stood on his solid numbers at the combine and tried to explain away the fact that he missed a couple of team interviews at the combien after reportedly oversleeping because he had gone to the combine with a bad cold and took too much Nyquil and slept through his alarm clock. Makes sense to us! Among former Aggies not at the combine, big-play WR Uzoma Nwachukwu, who averaged almost 19 yards per reception in 2012 (although he only had 28 total catches) showed some big-play athletic ability posting a 39.5-inch vertical, 25 reps in the bench press while running times in the 4.45 range for the 40 with relatively quick times in both the short shuttle (4.21) and 3-cone drill (6.77). Safety Steven Terrell also showed some impressive athleticisim by running the 40 in the low 4.4 range, while posting a vertical leap of 38-5 inches. Same for little used CB C.J. Jones, a one-time member the track team at A&M who might get some looks as a special team's specialist after running the 40 in around 4.4 seconds and posting a 40.5-inch vertical. DT Spencer Nealy ran in the 5.10-5.15 range and seemed to impress scouts with his overall performance. |
| FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL 08/03) |
FIU FS Jonathan
Cyprien, who did not run at the combine, reportedly ran the 40 in the
low-to-id-4.5 range. OLB Tourek Williams was asked to do some work at
OLB and reportedly held up surprisngly well moving in reverse for a
6-4, 253-pounder. Former FIU OT Rupert Paul has dropped down to 244
pounds and is working as a FB. |
| CLEMSON (07/03) |
At the Clemson pro day
DE Malliciah Goodman improved on a disappointing 4.87 40 clocking at
the combine running an unofficial 4.65 with a 1.67 split, although the
latter was actually a hair slower than in Indy. At the same time, WR
DeAndre Hopkins again ran in the mid-4.5 ange, but as he did at the
combine shined in the positional drills. Among former Tigers not at the
combine (and Clemson may have led the league in rated prospects not
invited to Indianapolis), C Dalton Freeman had a strong showing running
the 40 in a quick 5-flat, but with a relatively slow 1.83 split, while
posting 34 reps in the bench press and a 32-inch vertical. Scouts,
though, remain a tad concerned about his lean frame at 6-4.5, but only
291 pounds. SS Jonathan Meeks (6-0, 24) also had a quick 40 run as he
was timed in 4.48, but was not a s quick in the agility drills posting
times of 4.34 in the short shuttle and 7.13 in the 3-cone drill; he
also had a respectable 23 reps in the bench press, but a slightly
disappointing vertical of just 33.5 inches. Fellow S Rashard didn't run
as well with a slow 4.68 time in the 40, but was quicker in both the
short shuttle (4.28) and 3-cone drill (6.87), although neither time was
all that impressive compared with the safeties at this year's combine.
Hall's vertical of 36 inches though was pretty good. Meanwhile, Xavier
Brewer, a third former Clemson safety ran the 40 in 4.62, but pulled a
hamstring and did not particpate in the other drills. TE Brandon Ford
also had a pretty good day running the 40 in 4.73 seconds, while
posting a 37-inch vertical and 17 reps in the BP, along with times of
4.67 seconds in the short shuttle and 7.13 in the 3-cone drill,
although again neither would have been among the leaders at the
position at the combine. |
| ILLINOIS (07/03) |
Almost all NFL teams had reps at the Illinois pro day where the 4 former Illini - DE/LB Michael Buchanan, DT Akeem Spence, CB Terry Hawthorne and OG Hugh Thornton - participated in positional drills, but otherwise generally stood on their combine numbers. Hawthorne, though, did run the short shuttle and 3-cone drill, posting times of 4.26 and 6.88 seconds respectively in each, although neither time would have been in the top 10 at the position at the combine. Meanwhile, fellow CB Justin Green reportedly ran the 40 in close to 4.40 seconds. The guy who had NFL people scrambling for their programs though was DT Glenn Foster (6-3.5, 286) who put on an elite athletic show with a 39.5-inch vertical leap and 10-9 in the broad jump, while posting 29 bench press reps; Foster also ran the 40 in just under 4.80 seconds, along with times of 4.46 in the short shuttle and 7.09 in the 3-cone drill, all of which would have ranked in the top 10-15 among defensive linemen at this year's NFL combine. And that had pro scouts asking themselves how come such an athletic player was barely on their radar. The simple answer is he never made much of an impact with the Illini. In fact, Foster was a resonably highly regarded recruit coming out of high school, but didn't play at all his first three years at Illinois; and while he did start much of the past couple of years and had 64 tackles in that period including three sacks he made few impact plays. |
| TEXAS TECH (07/03) |
At Texas Tech, FS Cody
Davis (6-2, 203) may have put himself in the late-round discussion at
the position after running the 40 in the mid-4.4 range, while posting a
41.5 vertical and times of 4-flat in the short shuttle and 6.78 in the
3-cone drill, both of which would have been among the leaders at the
position at the combine; h also posted 15 reps in the BP. Meanwhile, OT
LaAdrian Waddle (6-6, 321) ran the 40-yard dash in the 5.40 range and
managed 23 reps in the BP, while QB Seth Doege (6-1, 200) ran the 40 in
a little disappointing time in the 4.90 area. |
| TEXAS CHRISTIAN (07/03) |
At TCU hybrid DE/LB
Stansly Maponga, who did not workout at the combine did not exactly
light it up as expected at the Horned Frogs but a foot problem didn't
help. Maponga ran the 40 in the mid-to-high 4.8 range, while posting
times of 4.37 in the short shuttle and 7.30 in the three-cone drill;
the former actually would have been among the top 5 or so times for DEs at the combine, but the latter wasn't close;
neither was his 29.5 inch vertical. Maponga will now reportedly may
need to undergo surgery to repair a foot injury that forced him
to miss three games last season. Same story for WR Josh Boyce who showd
up at the TCU pro day on crutches after undergoing surgery on a foot
earlier in the week; after running under 4.4 at the combine, though,
Boyce had less to prove. Meanwhile, OG Blaize Foltz and WR Skye Dawson, wgho were not invited to the
combined served notice that they should at least get some late round
consideration. Foltz posted 33 reps in the BP and ran the 40 in the
mid-to-high 5.3 range before taking some snaps at center, while Dawson
reportedly ran the 40 in the low 4.4 area and caught the ball well in
passing drills. |
| SYRACUSE (07/03) |
Reps from 29 NFL teams, including Buffalo G.M. Buddy Nix were at the SU pro day where QB Ryan Nassib reportedly threw the ball well through a 74-play script program with only one clear miss and three other drops. Meanwhile, G/T Justin Pugh, who didn't lift at the combine, set a PB of 23 reps in the bench press, although that is not a particularly impressive total for a short-armed offensive lineman. DE Deon Goggins also reportdly had a good day posting a 37.5-inh vertical and a 40-time in the 4.8 range. |
| NEW MEXICO (07/03) |
Only three teams were
at the New Mexico pro day where PK Greg Rivara showed off a very strong
leg hitting on a 60-yard FG as well as several others from outside the
50. Of the former Lobo position players, WR Lamar Thomas had a strong
day running the 40 in the 4.4 range and posting a 38.5-inch vertical. |
| MIAMI (07/03) |
All but two NFL teams were represented at the Miami pro day with New England head coach Bill Belicek and Giants VP of Player personnel Chris Mara in the crowd. Undersized OLB Ramon Buchanon (6-1.5, 215) had a solid workout running the 40 in under 4.6 seconds, while posting a 34 inch vertical and 20 reps in the BP; he also had a time of 7.29 seconds in the 3-cone drill that would have been among the top 10 for the position at the combine. Meanwhile, SS Vaughn Telemaque (6-1, 200) had an impressive 36 -inch vertical jump , but didn't run all that well with a 40-time over 4.7 seconds and a 6.97 3-cone clocking. Wide-body DT Darius Smith (6-1.5, 335) managed 33 reps in the BP, but only had a 5.55 40 clocking. WR Kendal Thompkins (5-10, 175) had the top 40 time on the day for the Hurricanes as he clocked under 4.4 seconds. Also participating in the Miami was former Hurricane's FS Ray Ray Armstrong who got the boot prior to last season for repeated off-field incidents involving extra benfits. Armstrong who was once considered to be a first round prospect measured in at 6-3, 216, ran the 40 in 4.65 seconds, had a 34.5 inch vertical, did 18 reps in the bench press and had a 3-cone drill time of 7.23. In other words 'meh!' |
| MISSISSIPPI (07/03) |
Reps from 15 teams were
at the Ole Miss pro day where several reportly mistook OT Terrell Brown
for a building. Indeed, at 6-10, 388 with 38-inch arms, Brown may be
the biggest player ever to be tested for the draft. Unfortunately,
Brown may also be the slowest after he stopped the sundial in a time
over 5.80 for the 40 that only Rich Eisen could envy. |
| EASTERN WASHINGTON (06/03) |
18 NFL teams had reps
at the EWU pro day which was conducted in a borderline blizzard which
limited passing and receiving drills. That was unfortunate because the
EWU guys pro teams wanted to see were QB Kyle Padron and WRs Brandon
Kaufman, Nick Edwards and Greg Herd. Padron (6-3, 221), the former SMU
starter, ran the 40 in the 4.8 range, while the 6-5 Kaufman took a
little off his 4.67 time from the combine. Meanwhile, Edwards (6-3,
204) posted a very good 40-inch vertical and 16 reps in the BP; he also
had respectable times of 4.09 in the short shuttle and 6.90 in the
3-cone drill, both of which would have been close to top 10 times for
the position at the combine, but only managed a slowish 4.60 for the
40. On the other hand, Herd (6-3, 202) ran a decent 4.50 40, but
managed only a 33.5-inch vertical and 13 reps in the BP and was slower
in the agility drills. OT Will Post (6-5, 308) also only managed 17
reps in the BP, ran the 40 in 5.35 seconds and posted times of 4.83 in
the short shuttle and 7.77 in the 3-cone drill, neither of which are
particularly quick. |
| MISSISSIPPI STATE (06/03) |
CB Johnthan Banks hoped to improve on his disappointing 4.61 40 time at the combine, but basically clocked in the same range at the Bulldogs' pro day. Banks, though, reportedly looked good in the positional drills. Meanwhile, WR Chap Bumphis (5-10 1/8, 196) ran the 40 in the mid-4.5 area, posted a 35-inch vertical, and managed times of 6.91 seconds in the three-cone drill and 4.26 in the short shuttle. |
| KENT STATE (06/03) |
Reps from 16 teams were at the Kent State pro day including 7 offensive line coaches from around the league. They were there to see G/T Brian Winters who didn't workout at the combine. Winters reportedly ran the 40 on a fast track in the 5.25-5.30 range, while he completed the short shuttle in 4.75 seconds and the 3-cone drill in 7.57 seconds while posting jumps of 27 inches in the vertical and 8-11 in the broad. None of those figures though would have put him in the top 10 at the combine. While NFL teams are very familiar with Winters, fellow OL Josh Kline has been something of an eyeopener. OG Kline (6-2.5, 307) is a tad short, but had a quick 40 clocking of under 5.2 seconds, although his agility drill times - 4.59 in the short shuttle and 7.66 in the three-cone drill - were nothing special. Kline also posted 25 reps in the BP. |
| WISCONSIN (06/03) |
All but two teams were
at the Wisconsin pro day where RB Montee Ball reportedly ran better
than he did at the combine when he clocked a slow time of 4.66,
although Ball now states that he had a sinus infection and was on
medication at the time of his combine workout. No official time was
announced following today’s workout, but scout’s in attendance
reportedly had him between 4.46 and 4.53 seconds over what was
described as a fast 40 track. Of course, those are also hand-timed
clockings, not electronic so it may not be a perfect comparison with
his combine numbers. In fact, Ball's time was probably closer to a
tenth under his combine time rather than the wo-tenths that have been
reported in some headlines. Still, somewhere in the 4.55-4.60 range is
a solid time for a runner like Ball. Meanwhile, CBs Devin Smith
(5-10.5, 182) and
Marcus Cromartie (6-0, 195), neither of whom was at the combine, also
both ran well. Smith had unofficial 40 clockings around 4.50, along
with times of 6.67 in the three-cone drill and 4.06 in the second short
shuttle; he also had 17 lifts in the bench press. For his part,
Cromartie had 40 times in the 4.45 range, along with times of 4.08 in
the short shuttle and 6.91 in the three-cone drill, while he posted a
34-inch vertical and managed 14 reps in the BP. NFL teams were also
anxious to get a look at Wisconsin-Platteville SS Ryan McWethy who is
built like a LB at 6-1.5, 226, but still put on an athletic show with a
40-time in the mid-4.5 range, along with a 37.5 vertical, 31 reps in
the BP, and shuttle times of 4.14 in the short shuttle and 6.63
in the three-cone drill. Unfortunately, McWethy looked stiff and in the
positional drills where he did not look particularly smooth or
instinctive. |
| UMASS (06/03) |
RB Mike Cox (6-0, 220) didn't run particularly well posting a 40 time over 4.6 seconds, but impressed otherwise with a 38-inch vertical and 24 reps in the bench press, along with times of 4.09 in the short shuttle and 6.87 in the three-cone drill. |
| SOUTH FLORIDA (6/03) |
Former USF QB B.J.
Daniels, who had over 10,000 yards of total offense in his four-year
career, but likely will have to make a position switch to play in the
NFL, ran in the mid 4.6 range for the 40, did 20 reps in the bench
press, and had a 30-5 inch vertical, none of which was particularly
impressive for anything but a QB. |
| BUFFALO (05/03) |
As many as 18 NFL
teams, along with a full complement of front office personnel from the
Bills, were represented at the Buffalo pro day, although no one from
the program is likely to be selected at this year‘s draft. DE/LB Steven
Means, ILB Willie Moseley and OT Gio Ozkan, though, should be strong
free agent candidates. Means, a former basketball player who had 18.5
career sacks as a down DE, measured in at 6-3.5, 257, ran the 40 in the
mid-4.7 range and was fluid in coverage drills at OLB where he showed
nice change-of-direction speed. Meanwhile, Mosely also ran the 40 in
under 4.8 seconds at 6-4, 246, while Ozkan weighed in at 315, down
about ten pounds from his collegiate playing weight, but managed only
19 reps in the bench press and ran the 40 in the 5.3-second range. |
| AUBURN (05/03) |
RB Onterrio McCalebb put on another athletic performance at the Tigers pro day as he was clocked in the 4.3 range for the 40, while posting a 37-inch vertical. For the record, McCalebb's 40 time simply confirmed that he is one of the fastest players in this yar's draft after he was timed in 4.34 at the combine, while his vertical was up three inches from Indy. Pro teams, though, aren't sold on McCalebb's future as an NFL RB as he weighs under 170 pounds so he was asked to workout as both a receiver and as a corner. Same story for DE Corey Lemonier who basically stood on his solid combine workout, but did participate in some OLB drills to show teams that he could play the postion in a 3-4 scheme. The numbers weren't necessarily all that graet for the rest of the Tigers that worked out in front of reps from 23 NFL teams. TE Phillip Lutzenkirchen, who still doesn't look 100% after undergoing hip surgery, for example, was hoping to improve on his disappointing 40 time of 4.95 from the combine but was actually slightly slower. Meanwhile, WR Emory Blake, who cuaght passes from his father, former NFL QB Jeff Blake, for example, ran the 40 in over 4.65 seconds , but did have a 36.5 vertical while posting a good time of 6.96 seconds in the three-cone drill. At the same time, fellow WR Travante Stallworth ran the 40 in the 4.55 range for the 40, while posting a time of 6.90 seconds in the three-cone drill time; he also had a 35-5" vertical while registering 13 reps in the bench press. Safety T’Sharvan Bell also had decent shuttle times of 6.93 in the three-cone drill and 4.10 in the short shuttle, but his 40 time close to 4.7 once adjusted. LB Jonathan Evans ran his 40 in an adjusted time between 4.75-4.80, while posting 14 reps in the bench press, a 30” vertical, and a three-cone time of 7.29. LB Daren Bates, who also got some work with the DBs had unofficial results of around 4.6 seconds on the 40, 15 reps in the bench press, a 33.5” vertical jump, and 7.12 seconds in the three-cone drill. |
| YOUNGSTOWN STATE (05/03) |
As many as a dozen
scouts were at the YSU workout where star OG Lamar Mady stood on his
solid combine numbers and just did positional drills. Mady is likely
the Penguins only draft prospect, but TE Will Shaw, C Mike Pratt and DT
Aronde Stanton could get some free agent props. Shaw (6-2, 245), who
led the team in receiving last fall, ran the 40 in the 4.8 range, while
posting 24 reps in the bench press, along with a solid 34.5" vertical
and times of 4.32 in the short shuttle and 6.89 in the 3-cone drill.
Pratt (6-2, 295) ran the 40 in the 5.45 range with 23 reps in the BP,
while Stanton also had 23 reps in the BP and a 34-5' vertical, but had
to skip the running drills after tweaking a hamstring on his first 40
run. |
| ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF (04/03) |
Over a dozen NFL teams were represented at the APB pro day with most in attenance to see OT Terron Armstead, one of the fastest risers in this year's draft class after his outstanding week at the combine. Meanwhile, DE Brandon Thurmond, who had 17.5 sacks in 2012, the most at any level of NCAA football, but still wasn't invited to the combine, reportedly ran in the mid-4.7 range for the 40-yard dash, had a 32 inch vertical, a 8-5 inch broad jump and did 22 repetitions on the bench press; Thurmond measured in at 6-1, 255, while MLB Bill Ross, who had 127 tackles this past season measured in at 6-0, 240. |
| UAB (04/03) |
Only 5 teams (and 2 of
those were late arriving) were at the Alabama-Birmingham pro day. In
the
end, they didn't miss much as MLB Marvin Burdette, the Blazers only
legit pro prospect , pulled up lame in his first 40 attempt with a
strained quad. Burdette, who had over 400 career tackles and played in
a couple of preliminary all-star games, hopes to conduct a private
workout sometime prior to the draft. |
| MINNESOTA (04/03) |
A Bakers dozen NFL teams were on hand for the Minnesota pro day where former Gophers QB MarQueis Gray also worked out as a WR and TE; Gray who ran a somewhat disappointing 4.73 40 at the combine rally didn't imrove much on that time if at all as he reportedly continues to recover from a high-ankle sprain he suffered last season. The player at the Minnesota pro day though who had pro scouts scrambling to find some tape was Northern Iowa WR Terrell Sinkfield, who was never that productive at NIU, but turned in arguably the most athletic performance of the pre-draft process when he posted a 40.5 inch vertical and a 11-5 broad jump before running a sub-4.3 40 that at least one team reportedly had under 4.2 hand-timed. |
| UTEP (01/03) |
A half dozen NFL teams
attended the UTEP workout where OT James Nelson impressed with his size
- he measured in at 6-6.5, 321 with 36.5 inch arms - but wasn't very
athletic at all as he only ran the 40 in sun-dial time of 5.77 seconds
while posting just 18 reps in the bench press. |
| PURDUE (01/03) |
The Boilermakers kicked
off the pro day circuit with an on-campus workout atended by as many as
18 NFL teams. The number likely would have been considerably higher had
DT Kawann Short, a potential late first or early second pick this
coming April, didn’t participate as he is still rehabbing from a
hamstring injury suffered during a pre-combine training session, For
the record, Short will have a private workout later this month. Among
former Boilermakers who were able to partcipate, QB Robert Marve who
tore an ACL early last season, reportedly ran well posting a 40-time in
the 4.7 range. Meanwhile, RB Akeem Shavers at least sent pro teams back
to the Purdue game tape as he put on an athletic show running the 40 in
the mid-4.4 range and posting a 39" vertical and a 10-10 broad jump,
while registering 19 reps in the bench press. Those figures would all
have been among the combine leaders at the position, although the 5-10,
205-pound Shavers who ran for just under 900 yards this past season is
still more of a free agent type prospect. There were also reports
that CB Josh Johnson improved on his disappointing 4.65 40 time at the
comine, but those have nor been confirmed and even if he did it wasn't
much below 4.6. |
