College Match-ups Week 8

By | October 22, 2015

Looking at this weekend’s college games I really don’t see a can’t miss game on the board. But there are some good conference match-ups and lots of prospects to scout. So here are my top 4.

SATURDAY NOON/ET ABC
CLEMSON by 8 @ MIAMI
This gets interesting, perhaps, primarily because Clemson is on the road. But Miami no longer holds the home field edge of playing in the Orange Bowl. The Hurricanes are a bit of an enigma, and if AL GOLDEN doesn’t get things rolling soon he may be forced out as head Coach. Expect ABC to give you a few shots of airplanes flying “Fire GOlden” banners around the stadium. The Tigers are rounding into top shape with their younger players gaining valuable playing experience to go with their raw talent. WATSON/#4 and KAAYA/#15 are two of the top young QB around, though not Draft eligible as true sophomores. I expect Clemson to pull away in the second half of action.
Players to watch:

CLEMSON                                                         MIAMI

#18 CHARONE PEAKE/WR 6’2/205              #2 DEON BUSH/FS 6’1/205
#20 JAYRON KEARSE/S 6’4/210 JR              #6 HERB WATERS/WR 6’2/195
#48 D.J. READER/DT 6’2/320                       #17 TYRIQ McCORD/LB 6’3/236
#73 JOE GORE/OT 6’5/290                            #47 UFOMBA KAMALU/DT 6’6/295
#90 SHAQ LAWSON/DE 6’3/275 JR

SATURDAY 3:30/ET ESPN2
TEXAS TECH @ OKLAHOMA by 5
I’m not sold that the Sooners are as good as their pasting of K-State last week. TECH is a gritty team whose QB #5/PATRICK MAHOMES is really slinging the ball around at a record setting clip. BAKER MAYFIELD/#6 has been hot and cold for the Sooners. I don’t see either team as Top 10 material this season, but it could be a fun watch. As you’ll see below there are some solid NFL prospects on both teams.
Prospects to watch:

TEXAS TECH                                                       OKLAHOMA

#3 J.J. GAINES/S 6’1/181                                       #3 STERLING SHEPHERD/WR 5’10/195
#9 BRANDEN JACKSON/DE 6’4/268               #15 ZACH SANCHEZ/CB 5’11/180 JR
#10 PETE ROBERTSON/OLB 6’3/238              #19 ERIC STRIKER/LB 6’/221
#11 JAKEEM GRANT/WR/RS 5’7/169              #54 NILA KASITATI/G 6’4/315
#62 LeRAVEN CLARK/OT 6’6/315                    #91 CHARLES TAPPER/DE 6’4/281
#90 KELAND McELRATH/DT 6’4/307

SATURDAY 7:30/ET SEC NETWORK
KENTUCKY @ MISSISSIPPI STATE by 5
Gotta like the BULLDOGS and DAK PRESCOTT at home. But the Wildcats have a solid squad and look like a bowl team this season. MELVIN LEWIS, may miss this contest, and he leads a strong DL group for Kentucky. DL also happens to be a real strength for the Bulldogs. State needs this home win badly to secure that important 6th Win. Their November schedule is brutal after a Bye week. There is more defensive talent overall and serious draft prospects on Defense for both teams.
Prospects to watch:

KENTUCKY                                                         MISSISSIPPI STATE

#1 A.J. STAMPS/S 6’/197                                      #96 CHRIS JONES/DT 6’5/308 JR
#3 FRED TILLER/CB 6’/177                               #15 DAK PRESCOTT/QB 6’2/230
#45 JOSH FOREST/LB 6’3/239                         #23 TAVEZE CALHOUN/CB 6’1/185
#67 CORY JOHNSON/DE 6’3/297                    #48 RYAN BROWN/DE 6’5/262
#75 ZACH WEST/OG 6’4/312                             #70 JUSTIN MALONE/OG 6’7/320
#90 MELVIN LEWIS/DT 6’4/340

SATURDAY 7:30/ET FOX
UTAH by 3 @ SOUTHERN CAL
This looks the best match-up of the weekend to me because the Trojans may be ready for a bIg upset win at home for their new Head Coach CLAY HELTON, and NFL prospects abound even if we only consider seniors. The UTES have to be the favorite, but they have played some very tight games recently and don’t always over power opponents. Then again 6-0 in the powerful PAC 12 is outstanding and they have the horses to keep rolling. These rosters should produce a high level of play overall. The two QB, WILSON & KESSLER, are both legit NFL prospects worth keeping an eye on.
Prospects to watch:

UTAH                                                                      SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

#2 KENNETH SCOTT/WR 6’3/208                    #6 CODY KESSLER/QB 6’1/215
#7 TRAVIS WILSON/QB 6’7/233                       #13 KEVON SEYMOUR/CB 6’/185
#9 TEVIN CARTER/SS 6’2/225                          #23 TRE MADDEN/RB 6’1/225
#23 DEVONTAE BOOKER/RB 5’11/212           #52 DELVON SIMMONS/DL 6’5/295
#33 TOM HACKETT/P 5’11/195                          #56 ANTHONY SARAO/LB 6’/235
#41 JARED NORRIS/LB 6’2/240                        #93 GREG TOWNSEND/DE 6’3/275
#69 SAOSI ANONO/OC 6’3/305                         #99 ANTWAUN WOODS/DT 6’1/320

Enjoy the football folks!
